  3. #1: “With an ever increasing global population, massive 3rd world hunger, and with an estimation that a child dies for every two seconds world wide from starvation; this does not even take into account the number of people who are mal and undernourished, there is a great promise in the use of this technology to benefit not only the farmers, but also societies worldwide....Finally, GM foods can create an essential sustainable way to feed the world.”

    - This is relevant to my topic because it shows a benefit of GM foods. GM foods are produced at a quicker pace than traditionally grown foods. This means that more foods can be grown to feed the growing population of the world and especially feed those who are malnourished.

#2: “Modern day’s farmers prefer to cultivate genetically modified food because they get more crops, can grow the crops in any climatic conditions and do not use tons of pesticides annually as consumers do not wish to eat food that has been treated with pesticides due to health hazards. These crops do not rot quickly for which the farmers get more profit.”

    - There are many advantages to GM foods. GM foods are grown faster than traditional crops, they can grow at any climatic condition and do not rot as quickly as traditional crops.

These are found in ingredients derived from the most common GMO crops, including: Corn: 88 percent (21.2 million hectares) of American corn...Soy: 93 percent (54.4 million hectares)...Cottonseed: 94 percent (9.8 million hectares)...Papaya: 75 percent of Hawaiian papaya....Canola (rapeseed): 90 percent (4.6 million hectares) of canola (used in oil)...Sugar beets: Over 50 percent...”

    - Based on these facts, GM foods make up the majority of processed foods. These GM foods (corn, soy, papaya, etc..) are made available to everyone in supermarket.

  4. • The Bush administration view, as defined by the Colin Powell speech before the UN, postulated that there might have been a cooperative relationship, but that Saddam was not supportive of the 9/11 attacks. Powell presented several credible intelligence reports vetted by the Intelligence Community showing contacts between Iraq's Intelligence Service and al-Qaeda. Powell pointed out that Saddam had already supported Islamic Jihad, a radical Islamist group, and that there was no reason for him not to support al-Qaeda. Powell discussed concerns that Saddam may provide al-Qaeda with chemical or biological weapons. The Bush Administration view may have been influenced in part by Laurie Mylroie, whose presentation argued not only that Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda have a cooperative relationship, but also that the Iraqi regime supported the 9/11 attacks as well. Mylroie maintains that the existence of a Saddam-9/11 link has been confirmed by evidence uncovered since Saddam's overthrow. Dr. Robert S. Leiken of the Nixon Center disagreed, arguing that "the joint FBI-INS-police PENTBOM investigation, the FBI program of voluntary interviews and numerous other post-9-11 inquiries, together comprising probably the most comprehensive criminal investigation in history—chasing down 500,000 leads and interviewing 175,000 people -- has turned up no evidence of Iraq's involvement; nor has the extensive search of post-Saddam Iraq by the Kay and Duelfer commission and US troops combing through Saddam’s computers. Mylroie's theories continued to influence the administration long after they were discredited; reporters have revealed that she was working for the Pentagon as late as 2007, authoring at least two studies on Saddam for the Pentagon's Office of Net Assessment.

    • In the initial stages of the war on terror, the Central Intelligence Agency, under George Tenet, was rising to prominence as the lead agency in the Afghanistan war. But when Tenet insisted in his personal meetings with President Bush that there was no connection between Al Qaeda and Iraq, V.P. Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld initiated a secret program to re-examine the evidence and marginalize the CIA and Tenet. The questionable intelligence acquired by this secret program was "stovepiped" to the vice president and presented to the public. In some cases, Cheney’s office would leak the intelligence to reporters, where it would be reported by outlets such as The New York Times. Cheney would subsequently appear on the Sunday political television talk shows to discuss the intelligence, referencing The New York Times as the source to give it credence.

  6. Thesis: Schools should only distribute nutritious food.

#1: According to an online poll at About.com, more than 40 percent of American parents state that their children do not eat breakfast on a regular basis. School lunches, then, are an even more essential component in the diets of most students. In fact, American students consume an estimated 20 to 50 percent of their total daily calories while at school.
-Since American students consume 20 to 50 percent of their daily calories while at school, they should be provided with nutritious food.

#2: The American Beverage Association trade group said the industry already was changing the type of products available in schools to reduce calories and portion size, and had agreed to voluntary guidelines on items sold in schools.
-Although The American Beverage Association trade group said that they were already switching the products available, it seems to be ineffective because obesity is still rising.

#3: Maintaining the presence of fast food, soft drink, and junk food companies in public schools sends all the wrong messages to children. These companies are eager to sell their products in schools because they want to get kids hooked at an early age, to ensure brand loyalty for life.
-If only nutritious foods were distributed to children, they wouldn’t have access to junk food, which therefore would decrease obesity and increase healthy lifestyles.

I think it would be interesting if you add information/facts about schools who have actually distributed only nutritional foods and how students responded to that change. Did students eat lunch more or less? Etc...

  7. Thesis “Women should stay at home and care for children”

Putting Dad in the Picture: fatherhood in the popular women's magazines of 1950s Australia

For centuries it has always been the mother’s domain to care of her children and the economic responsibility belongs to the father. The reason this evidence is vital to my research is because it not only shows that this ideology of the women’s role is in the United States, but all over the world like in Australia. It is not only affected their thoughts, but their magazine articles.

    http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09612025.2013.780843

Many believe that a young girl needs a strong women role model that is her mother. It is very important for a daughter to dream to have a “successful career and a family”. The problem with this is that mothers tend to get caught up with all the work they have during the day and when they get home for work. They have the right intention, but they don’t execute it well by paying more attention to work instead of the most important factor of their life which is their children. Also if mothers have sons, the son needs a good role model as well, but if both parents are preoccupied with their work then in the end the children will be neglected by both parents.
Hoffman, 'The Effects of the Mother's Employment on the Family and the Child'

Nurseries are seen as a positive environment for children because they are able to form relationships with students so when they go to primary school they have friends. They also will be more mature and comfortable with the environment. A child psychologist Oliver James disagrees with this statement saying that “‘while nursery care may do no harm to about two-thirds of children, there is undeniable evidence that the experience is highly stressful and can be harmful’ also Professor Sylvana has admitted that students who attend childcare at an early age, create a stronger aggression when they attend school.

    1. For your second piece of evidence, some may argue why should women stay at home and care for their children? This will only make all that women fought for (equal rights, etc...) basically useless if we are going back to the traditional roles of the women.

Lach, Alex. 5 Facts About Overseas Outsourcing. 2012 July 9. 2014 Feb 4.
    http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/labor/news/2012/07/09/11898/5-facts-about-overseas-outsourcing/

“Often, the intent is to take advantage of lower wages and operating costs”(Lach). This article confirms the common misconceptions in regards to outsourcing in overseas. It goes into depth to explain why companies truly outsource in other countries. The main reasons are lower wages and lower taxes on the money that is made in the country. This article also talks about off-shoring which is another way to say outsourcing. It provides statistics for the amount of jobs lost in the U.S to offshoring.

“Today, more companies are committed to providing those outsourcing opportunities to companies and professionals within the United States”(Cohen). This article is basically my counterargument. It states that outsourcing is not as big of a problem anymore. It challenges people’s misconceptions about offshoring. Companies are still outsourcing overseas, but they are start to offer those opportunities on the homefront.

    Crosby, Tim. 2014 Feb 4.http://money.howstuffworks.com/outsourcing3.htm

“companies typically cite factors such as quality commitment, price, reputation, business culture compatibility and location when selecting a vendor for outsourcing”(Crosby). This article also gives background into why companies choose to outsource overseas. The primary factor of outsourcing for many companies and the amount of labor. Many of these underdeveloped countries work longer and get paid less, and this is legal due to the lack of protection of the people. U.S and other countries are aware of these conditions and take advantage of these conditions and make more money than they can in their own country.

  9. "censorship was achieved through the examination of books, plays, films, television and radio programs, news reports, and other forms of communication for the purpose of altering or suppressing ideas found to be objectionable or offensive."
-All these have been censored in the new generation and has been very controversial. Many books, songs, and movies have been banned for being to controversial or too explicit for the reader. The way they ban books in Arizona and other states affects the knowledge the student gets which limits their resources.

"As a regulatory agency, the FCC has executive, legislative, and judicial functions."
-This proves how the FCC has too much power from the government to censor just about anything. The FCC is the only group/committee who decides on what they think is appropriate for the viewer and what should be aired. This does not allow the viewer to decide what they want to see and what they believe is appropriate. You have all these different political parties with different views that might not necessarily be the same as those of the viewer.

  11. 1. the number of women who died from abortions prior to legalization has been drastically exaggerated; furthermore, women still die each year from complications of legal abortions. He concludes that legal abortion has not improved women's health, emphasizing the adverse impact it has had on both women and their unborn children. Forsythe is the president of Americans United for Life, an organization that opposes abortion.
In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics in 1972 show that 39 women died from illegal abortion and 27 died from legal abortion

2.But probably the biggest benefit of legalized abortion and the one with the greatest impact is that the number of unwanted children is decreasing. Children who are abused, brutalized, or neglected are more likely to become neurotic, psychotic, or criminal elements of society. They become individuals who do not care about themselves or others, who are prone to violence, who are filled with hatred for society and for other people; if the number of such individuals decreases, the welfare of society increases proportionately. -This information gives us all a sense of how large of an amount of people mental illnesses affects

"How do you recognize mental illness? How do you treat a person who has a mental illness?"
-These questions force us to think of alternatives in which we can help mentally ill patients but there isn't much we can do without having another person stop their lives to take care of someone who no longer wishes to live.

    2) "Baker cringes at the thought of those lost lives. Just two weeks ago [in late 2009] he lost his first group member to suicide.
"I lost my first one two weeks ago after twelve years," Baker said, wiping away tears. "I helped her every day. She was like a kid. A 46-year-old kid.""
-This further proves how much we can help patients by allowing them to resort to euthanasia rather than commit suicide. Assisted suicide will help family members cope with the loss of a loved one because it would be expected rather than a surprise.

  14. #1 “While research varies, affirmative action in college admission offices is the equivalent of adding 150 to 310 points on an SAT score for a minority.”

---Minority groups are given an advantage over other groups. This system is not fair because the system rewards students based on race rather than abilities. A student might not have tried hard to get a good SAT score, but might get his score “boosted” simply because he is “underprivileged.”

"11 Facts About Affirmative Action." Do Something. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2014.

#2 “Affirmative action may be unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Likewise, the programs may be illegal under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin by recipients of federal financial assistance.”

---Affirmative action has been proven to be discriminatory. States like California abolished this practice because of its reverse discrimination policy. Affirmative action does benefit groups like Latinos, African Americans, Asians, and women, however Whites, especially men, are often rejected from colleges and/or jobs because they are part of the majority.

#3 “At the same time, because admissions are a zero-sum game, preferences hurt poor whites and even many Asians (who meet admissions standards in disproportionate numbers). If preferences were truly meant to remedy disadvantage, they would be given on the basis of disadvantage, not on the basis of race.”

---Race does not determine disadvantage. First of all disadvantage needs to be defined. In my opinion, disadvantage should be considered regarding access to SAT prep, AP classes, extracurriculars, etc.
---People have failed to distinguish that being minority does not mean being at disadvantage, while being white means having all advantages. A poor white might face rejection to a college when compared to a middle-class African-American, simply because the second student was more “prone” to disadvantage due to race.

As determined by the research conducted, gay parents raising a child results in similar behavior to a child that was raised by a straight couple. All arguments that claim gay parents with a child will result in the child growing up to become a homosexual or be abused by the parent are incorrect based on the data collected.

Many would argue that a child needs both a maternal and patriarchal influence in his life. This will teach the child to be both sensitive and tough but these are stereotypes in gender roles that are not sufficient enough to say that a child needs both. There are many children that grow up with a one-parent household and grow up perfectly fine. It is also not fair to say that the two men raising a child will not raise the child to be both sensitive and tough. These characteristics are shown in all people and can be taught with correct parenting.

    #3:
Surrogacy is a good option for many gay men because at least one partner will be biologically connected to the child conceived. If you live in a state that prohibits LGBT adoption, using a surrogate will ensure you will be recognized as the child’s biological parent, and means you will not have to obtain an adoption to gain parental rights (Although your partner will).

Adoption is not the only way that same sex couples can have babies, there is also surrogacy an donor insemination. There are complications in some states that will not recognize a same sex couple as the parents of a baby. This is unfair for a couple raising a baby and is why surrogacy is a great solution to the problem. It is unfair that only one parent can be the actual parents but that is the best option so far and it works without the complications of parental rights.

  17. 1. A report in 2010 said that as many as 69 percent of certain employer-based insurance plans would lose that protection, meaning as many as 41 million people could lose their plans even if they wanted to keep them and would be forced into other plans. Another 11 million who bought their own insurance also could lose their plans. Combined, as many as 52 million Americans could lose or have lost old insurance plans.

    2. But a closer examination finds that the number of people who have plans changing, or have already changed, could be between 34 million to 52 million. That’s because many employer-provided insurance plans also could change, not just individually purchased insurance plans. This shows how Obama could not keep his promise. People were forced to buy the health insurance.

    3. About 60 million people are covered in fully insured plans, which make up about 40 percent of employer-provided health plans. Fully insured plans are usually offered by large employers. These plans have the insurance company rather than the employer assume the financial risk of annual health care expenses exceeding expectations. The rest of employers self-insure.To escape having to provide the new law’s minimum required benefits, plans would have to largely maintain the co-pays, premiums and out-of-pocket limits that existed prior to March 2010.

-In many of these fairy tales, women are seen as servants and finding love in these movies is contributed to how these women look. None of these women are large, or have 'unattractive' characteristics. These movies mess with children's views on how and what women should wear and do.

"And some trace those diverse crises back to a common root: a cultural education that from an early age denies men the chance to be open about their emotions."

This piece of evidence provides a reason for why prisons, homelessness, and addiction are male dominated. The author argues that, since boys are brought up being told not to show their emotions, boys/men rely on other means to express their emotions. For example, a loss of a loved one can cause a young man to begin doing drugs. Since they were never taught to properly show their emotions, young men will resort to self-destructive means to deal with what they are feeling.

""Many boys feel as if violence is the only way to resolve conflicts. I've seen boys result to violence because they felt disrespected or threatened in some way. Violence was a constant part of my life when I was a child. I fought other boys and had to defend myself against attacks. This constant aggression was unhealthy and affected my relationships. We have to teach our sons healthier conflict resolution techniques. Violence usually leads to more violence. Masculinity isn't defined by our ability to hurt and dominate others." - Frederick J. Goodall

Boys aren't necessarily taught the right way to express or fix disagreements. Boys are always told to "man up" or "tough it out" or "suck it up." It's statements like these that cause young boys to fix their problems by fighting or resorting to violence. They believe that when they are threatened the best thing to do is to fight back, as opposed to actually working things out to come to an agreement. As Goodall says, violence only leads to more violence. This idea can be transferred over to the "real world," men make up the vast majority of the prison population. Perhaps if boys were taught to express what they are feeling, many prisoners with "mental health problems" could actually get attention they deserve, and maybe prevent them from going to jail.

  21. Some students do not think of plan after high school that will involve college because of the cost, which will land them in debt, and because of the importance of the degree is not so highly seen as “spectacular.”

The economy is struggling because most occupations are searching for college graduates rather than students who have only completed high school; in addition, it’s hopeless and pointless for a high school graduate to look for a job in the 21st century.

“… [most state] that the weak economy means the job outlook for college grads “is rather bleak,” it is even more bleak if you don’t have a post-secondary degree…”

    http://www.salon.com/2013/08/22/start_funding_college_like_high_school/

This particular part is stating that education is one of the elements that is contributing to a student’s future of becoming wealthy (“economic success”). Even though the highest education won’t have enough good paying jobs, some type of education can help a nation’s unemployment rate with a job in general. Education has become a reason because today’s world is built with an economy based on knowledge.

“… an entire [nation] of PhDs and still have not enough good paying jobs. But that doesn’t mean access to higher education has nothing to do with a [student’s] economic success or an individual’s job-market prospects. As the data prove, education is a factor…”

    http://www.salon.com/2013/08/22/start_funding_college_like_high_school/

Some argue that a “high school diploma is the new college degree” because jobs aren’t accepting college graduates with a Bachelor’s degree or Associate degree, mainly the people with a Master’s or Ph.D.

The economy will only get better with students with a college degree, no matter the level the degree, but just the fact of receiving higher education shows the attainment of knowledge.
As seen, a person with at least a bachelor’s degree has a low unemployment rate, compared to a graduate of high school; a college graduate’s income is higher than just a high school graduate.

“Among those who graduate with a bachelor's degree, unemployment is 4.9 percent — about half the rate of [9.4 percent] those with only a high school diploma. Also, the income of those who have a four-year degree was about $1,000 a week, which is about two-thirds more than high school graduate.

Accordingly, a functional fitness program should be developed to meet combat athletes’ needs, just as professional athletes follow programs to maximize their fitness for their disciplines.

  23. Since the 1980s, dozens of smaller studies have suggested that countries with high rates of circumcision, like the Muslim nations of western Africa, have lower rates of AIDS, whereas southern* Africa, where circumcision is rare, has been ravaged by the epidemic. There, a 2006 study suggests, circumcision could prevent about 6 million HIV infections and 3 million deaths over 20 years.”

-Other than just tradition, male circumcision has a positive effect on a male’s health. By decreasing the percentage of HIV, less women are exposed to HIV as well. Male circumcision could be a key to overcome the HIV epidemic in Africa.

Male circumcision may also have a role for the prevention of HIV transmission in the United States. With the results of three clinical trials showing that male circumcision decreases the risk for HIV infection, CDC is undertaking additional research and consultation to evaluate the potential value, risks, and feasibility of circumcision as an HIV prevention intervention in the U.S.

-There are a number of important differences that must be considered in the possible role of male circumcision in HIV prevention in the U.S. However, the U.S. could overall lower the risk of HIV infection by adopting the practice of male circumcisions similar to Islamic countries.

"The fact that there is an increase in the number of people who demand the service is a success in itself because it shows that sensitization on its importance has been successful. We shall ensure that the children access the service.”

Because many U.S. parents asked for their young boys to get circumcised, it was argued that the U.S. should provide circumcision as a free service. While many in the U.S. believe that circumcision should be banned, statistics show that a large population demands for circumcision to be an available option for their children.

  24. 1.Vegetarian diets are more healthful than the average American diet, particularly in preventing, treating or reversing heart disease and reducing the risk of cancer. A low-fat vegetarian diet is the single most effective way to stop the progression of coronary artery disease or prevent it entirely. Cardiovascular disease kills 1 million Americans annually and is the leading cause of death in the United States.
-Becoming vegetarian came become a way of life that can cause people to live longer. Some people already live healthy lives, and becoming vegetarian can mean a more extreme form of healthy.

    2. Good nutrition generates more usable energy——energy to keep pace with the kids, tackle that home improvement project or have better sex more often, Michael F. Roizen, MD, says in The RealAge Diet. Too much fat in your bloodstream means that arteries won’’t open properly and that your muscles won’’t get enough oxygen. The result? You feel zapped. Balanced vegetarian diets are naturally free of cholesterol-laden, artery-clogging animal products that physically slow us down and keep us hitting the snooze button morning after morning.
-It makes you feel good. Apart from just the health benefits, you can also gain a better lifestyle.

    3. Some people become vegetarians after realizing the devastation that the meat industry is having on the environment. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), chemical and animal waste runoff from factory farms is responsible for more than 173,000 miles of polluted rivers and streams. Runoff from farmlands is one of the greatest threats to water quality today. Agricultural activities that cause pollution include confined animal facilities, plowing, pesticide spraying, irrigation, fertilizing and harvesting.
    - Help save the animals! A more ethical approach towards vegetarianism is to become aware of the damage that packaging meat can cause on our environment. Become part pf a movement that helps your personal health and also the lives of others.

"The results confirmed those of their previous study, that certain mental illness -- bipolar disorder -- is more prevalent in the entire group of people with artistic or scientific professions, such as dancers, researchers, photographers and authors. Authors also specifically were more common among most of the other psychiatric diseases (including schizophrenia, depression, anxiety syndrome and substance abuse) and were almost 50 per cent more likely to commit suicide than the general population. Further, the researchers observed that creative professions were more common in the relatives of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa and, to some extent, autism."

"The new work enhances a theory by Shelley Carson, a Harvard psychologist and author of the book Your Creative Brain, which says that creativity and mental illness share a process called "cognitive disinhibition." The term is a mouthful, but essentially cognitive disinhibition describes a failure to keep useless data, images, or ideas out of conscious awareness. This failure may make schizotypal personalities more prone to delusional thoughts or mental confusion; on the flipside, it could make creative minds more fertile."

    "Intelligent Design." - New World Encyclopedia. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Feb. 2014.

Inferring design from nature is at least as old as Plato and Aristotle, and Christian writers have used the inference for centuries to argue for God’s existence and attributes. The minimalist view described above, however, emerged in the 1980s.
Cosmologist Fred Hoyle used the term “intelligent design" in 1982, writing that unless a person is “deflected by a fear of incurring the wrath of scientific opinion, one arrives at the conclusion that biomaterials with their amazing measure of order must be the outcome of intelligent design.”[2] Soon afterward, chemist Charles B. Thaxton was impressed by chemist and philosopher Michael Polanyi’s argument that the information in DNA could not be reduced to physics and chemistry. Something more was needed. Thaxton later said that he preferred intelligent design to creationism because he “wasn’t comfortable with the typical vocabulary that for the most part creationists were using because it didn’t express what I was trying to do. They were wanting to bring God into the discussion, and I was wanting to stay within the empirical domain and do what you can do legitimately there.”
gives insight to the fact that plato and aristotle were the main pushers of intelligent design
