  1. Topic:
The topic I am writing about focuses on the controversy that surrounds the question, "Is Graffiti art or Vandalism," which has spread throughout the streets of Los Angeles and other cities and even abroad to Europe. Personally I would argue that graffiti is a form of 'street art' but for the sake of this argument paper I will be objective and reveal information from both sides' reasoning. "Graffiti," is known as street drawings, paintings, and writings on public surfaces. The issue is the debate on whether graffiti is to be respectfully recognized as a freelance style of 'public art' or just a simple crime violation of property damage and vandalism on city property. I am researching into both sides of this controversial issue. I am looking for information that I can find helpful in writing an argument essay that will help me come to an objective conclusion to which side is right.

    Research: (Appeal to Ethos)
""Bus stops are far more interesting and useful places to have art than in museums. Graffiti has more chance of meaning something or changing stuff than anything indoors. Graffiti has been used to start revolutions, stop wars, and generally is the voice of people who aren't listened to. Graffiti is one of those few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don't come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make somebody smile while they're having a piss...I'd never heard of the graffiti artist named Banksy until Esquire sent me to London to find him, which I did.

Right before I left the States, the magazine provided me with a list of art-world people to contact once I got there, people who might help me locate Banksy, but I paid about as much attention to that list as I would a parking ticket.

All I knew about the guy was stuff I read on the Web and his site, banksy.co.uk, which has a bunch of photos of his graffiti art and stencils, press clippings of him sabotaging big-name art museums with his work, and his manifesto, which stopped me cold. It's a diary entry of a British officer who was one of the first to liberate a concentration camp in 1945:[...]This Banksy might be a little bit more than just a wanted vandal with a can of Krylon spray paint.

Right after I checked into my hotel in central London, I went over to the concierge desk for a free map of the area. I asked both the middle-aged men working behind the counter if they'd ever heard of Banksy, and both of them smiled and told me that they were familiar indeed with Banksy and that his graffiti was all over town. I asked one of them, How big is he here in London? And he told me that he's pretty big, "but no Shawn Stussy." I thanked them and made my way over to a nearby bar and took a seat next to an old-timer who looked like a local.

I ordered a pint of bitter and noticed that it was at room temperature, so I asked the guy what was up with that, and the next thing I know, for the next thirty minutes he's giving me this detailed history lesson on all the London-based beers, and he ends every sentence with the question "Yeah?" He asked me where I was from and what I was doing in London, and I told him I came from Los Angeles and that Esquire sent me here to hunt down a graffiti artist named Banksy and that I had no idea whatsoever where to go or where to even begin to find this guy. He didn't know who Banksy was, but he had some advice for me: "Like-minded people always hang together, yeah? Art and thieves go together, yeah? So go to the area that has the most car thieves, yeah? And you'll find the most artists, yeah? And that's where you'll find him, yeah?"...

  2. Citation: Buzzell, Colby. "I am Banksy: a phantom with a stencil and a can of spray paint, maybe the premier 'guerrilla street artist' in the world, Banksy is almost impossible to find, but his work is everywhere and he makes people very, very happy." Esquire Dec. 2005: 198+. Fine Arts and Music Collection. Web. 11 Feb. 2015.

Reasoning: This piece of evidence is from an interview that a journalist had done on one of the most recognized graffiti artists in the subject, Banksy. The reason I have this research here is because I can use some pieces from this information to, in a way, put a face to the side of graffiti as an art form that holds Banksy in high regards due to the prominence of his works.

  4. Topic: As I was doing research on the contemporary archetypes, I came across a new one called the Artemis archetype. Katniss Everdeen, Anastasia Steele, and Lisbeth Salander are prime examples of the Artemis archetype.

Research (appeal to logos): "Katniss Everdeen is an Atalanta in Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" trilogy; Lisbeth Salander is a darker side of this same spirit in Steig Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." I also see Atalanta in Anastasia Steele, the main character in E. L. James' "Fifty Shades of Grey" who ventured into the wilderness of emotion and sexuality.

These are young women who call upon their intuition, depth of feeling and courage to go beyond previous limits; who feel fear and outrage and have to adapt and endure and not give in or give up. Each has an inner spirit that is not subdued, a will that is not broken. Each in her own way is a quirky, independent, courageous person who is in uncharted territory--the metaphoric wilderness, the realm of Artemis."

This will add to my topic because of the recognition for an archetype that has actually been alive for the longest time but is only given attention now because of the developments in society. The article also stated that the only Artemis character in literature was Jo March of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. This is due to her independent and hot- tempered nature.

    1. Feedback- Lilian, your topic seems really interesting. However, i would suggest to clarify on your topic a little more I have an idea of what your topic is, but I'm not 100% sure. Also elaborate on the Artemis Archetype, it's a really great piece of information, but I'm not really sure how it fits in with your research.

    2. I think you should expand upon on whether or not the Artemis archetype is negative or positive. Someone could say that the archetype represents a three dimensional character which depicts women as actual people who go through trials, but manage to trudge through them.

  5. Topic: My topic is about music and how it should be a part of everyone's daily life.

    Research: (Logos reasoning from authority…)
For todays post I found an article that was published in 1992. I chose to use this because it talked about how music was used in the past, and I found what was said really interesting. The author informs that, “In the Bible, David calmed King Saul's moods by playing the harp. Egyptians used music to calm their insane, and their mighty pyramids, were built to the rhythmic beat of it.” This shows the various uses of music in the past. The article goes on to talk about the benefits of music today. The author states that, “playing the piano or organ not only has mental benefits but is good for arthritic hands. Singing is beneficial for breathing organs,” he then goes on to inform that, “According to musical experts, singers seldom have pulmonary or chest complaints. In the mental health field singing is sometimes used for children who have trouble expressing their feelings in speech.” This shows that music is able to be beneficial. I will be using this to support my argument.

    2. Feedback- Ricard, you have an interesting topic. I'm not sure if you have researched this, but you should look into articles that have proven how music may be beneficial to everyone. There should be article on how listening to classical music increases "intelligence". I feel like that would help your argument in how music has a positive impact on peoples lives.

    3. I like how you note that singing and music in general are sometimes used for the actual purpose of patient care because it is believed to have healing effects. I think this is a strong argument when it comes to credibility because readers can connect it to what they see in real life.

  6. Topic: Prostitution

    Research: (appeal to logos)
"Many believe that the majority of prostituted children are from Southeast Asia and the majority of their clients are Western sex tourists, but sociologist Louise Brown argues that, while Westerners contribute to the growth of the industry, most of the children's customers are Asian locals.[11]

Prostitution of children usually occurs in environments such as brothels, bars and clubs, homes, or particular streets and areas (usually in socially run down places). According to one study, only about 10% of prostituted children have a pimp and over 45% entered the business through friends.[12] Maureen Jaffe and Sonia Rosen from the International Child Labor Study Office write that cases vary widely: "Some victims are runaways from home or State institutions, others are sold by their parents or forced or tricked into prostitution, and others are street children. Some are amateurs and others professionals. Although one tends to think first and foremost of young girls in the trade, there is an increase in the number of young boys involved in prostitution. The most disquieting cases are those children who are forced into the trade and then incarcerated. These children run the possible further risk of torture and subsequent death."
Explanation: On my last post I brought up the idea of child prostitution, and I have decided to use the idea of child prostitution to argue that prostitution is wrong . I have no problem with prostitution for adults because most(I know not all adults) adults voluntarily want to be prostitutes because of money or other reasons. However I think it is just wrong for children to be forced into prostitution for the pleasure of others. Especially since children can not make decision for them selves.

    1. Hello Helen. I would like to begin by saying that I like the direction that your research is going in. I feel like you have made your audience more interested in your topic by showing that there is a variety of prostitution in the world. I like the use of percentages to your argument, because it helps you look much more credible. My only suggestions are that you include info about male prostitution and a POV of people who don't think prostitution should be legalized.

    2. I think that it's good that you've decided to focus in on child prostitution specifically by arguing that it's wrong. Now, I think you'll be able to make a strong appeal to ethos morality since most people would sympathize with the manipulation of children more than adults. It's sad, but true.

  7. Topic: College Education. I've looked into a specific benefit of getting a college education, health care. A person who goes to college and gets a degree, is more likely to obtain health care for themselves.

Research: Studies have shown that college graduates are more likely to receive greater employer-provided benefits than employees without a college degree. This is especially true when it comes to healthcare coverage. A 2008 report produced by College Board showed that roughly 70 percent of individuals with a four-year college degree received HEALTH INSURANCEfrom their employer, while less than 50 percent of employees with only a high school diploma received the same benefit.

Across the board, college graduates are able to find jobs with better benefits. In addition to health care insurance, college graduates can look forward to better retirement matching, health savings accounts, tuition reimbursement, free childcare and reimbursement for travel and commuting costs. In some instances, a benefits package can be worth almost as much as an employee’s take-home pay.

    2. I agree with Ana the information you have seems to be helpful. I also think that this topic has a lot of potential because it affects a large amount of people. I also think that if you use this example you should look into the new healthcare system and how it works just to be sure.

      Delete
    3. I think its time for you to start looking for counter-arguements. For example, the debt that a college education leaves the average student isn't worth it. Or the job market does not need any more unemployed college graduates than it already has. Or that college degrees in specific areas of study do not necessarily determine your career path.

  8. Topic: Are ancient myths based on facts
I chose this topic because a great deal of people believe that the ancient myths of the world are nothing but the over active imagination of the people that lived in those time periods. I think that a lot of the myths are based on truth and have connections to human life. Also that these myths in certain religions are similar.
Working Thesis: Myths that are found in religions may be just that but they're not only connected to each other but also they are some that may be based on truths.

    Research: logos
I wanted to find more connections between the bible and greek mythology. In one of the most famous stories of greek mythology, a mortal man can be compared to many gospels in the bible: Odysseus. In the story, Odysseus overcomes multiple, impossible-seeming challenges. The main reason I want to focus on this man is because he can be compared to two of the most famous people in the bible.

Odysseus was one of the only greek heros know for his intellect. In one part of his long story he was described as defeating a massive man eating cyclops. He first started by getting the beast drunk off strong wine, the blinding it, and escaped from it. This tale is extremely close to David and Goliath. The hero won the battle by using his brain rather than his strength.

The next person Odysseus is compared can be found in the Gospel of Mark. Mark was a greek speaker and the Book was written in greek so its not entirely impossible that Mark heard the Odyssey. Both stories revolve around a suffering hero, Odysseus and Jesus Christ. Both main characters have carpenter backgrounds; Jesus being the son of a carpenter, and Odysseus being such a woodworker that he built his own palace. But the most intriguing connection is death; Odysseus’ journey to Hades and Jesus’s last days on earth. They both start off with a huge feast. the both heros are scared to die, and finally the both “die” in a sort of way only to be resurrected.

  9. Topic- The existence of mermaids.

Looking back on my previous post there was a moment in where I did believe that mermaids don’t exist due to some hard fact evidence on how a sailor can imagine, and mix up a human with a manatee to create a “mermaid”. Of course we can’t prove anything without hard core evidence and facts.

Research- “Mermaids heard and caught on film deep in the ocean off the coast of greenland.”

This is video came from part of an interview from the documentary Mermaids the Body found. Although I do agree that some of the footage from the documentary was fake, there were still clips, and real life footage from scientist in a submarine conducting research, and were stunt by what they’ve observed. If you speed the video up to minute 1:44, you will see that a “hand” hits the submarine leaving the scientist sturprised as to what had just occurred. Now by looking at the footage we can argue that this “creature” is a mermaids because what other aquatic animal had a hand with a fin on the side. Some myths, and creature are unexplainable, but given the evidence provided it would be impossible to argue that this was not a mermaid just captured on film. .

    1. Hey Melani, I would like to start off by informing you that less than 5% of the world's oceans have been explored, so the chance of mermaids existing is highly possible. I suggest that you try not to argue too much about proving that they exist with facts from people that can be labeled as "conspiracy theorists" You could try to prove that there is definitely a chance of mermaids existing due to my previously mentioned fact and you could also do research about how many things were unknown to the human race, but now are known. Ex: solar system revolves around the sun, not the earth.

The human race has been wring before. why not again, but with mermaids.

That's I have to say. good luck

    2. Hey Mel. you're doing great with the research. I agree with Bryan, don't focus solely on the quest to prove mermaids may exist. Try to build a counter argument, the jump back on the proving the mermaid exist train it might help you bring a stronger argument to you topic.

    3. Hi there Melani, I have to agree with Bryan.

You can point out the fact that not all of the ocean has been discovered, and that mermaids might exist. Like what Bryan mentioned, you might want to address that these might be conspiracy theories.

Also, I think that you can make a connection to the idea that aliens might exist. Since both the ocean and space have not been fully discovered, who is to say that nothing is out there?

You might want to also address the other side in your paper, and agree with some of the facts that mermaids might not exist in order to be credible.

Overall, good work and good luck.

    Topic: Colorism
    Research:
How does skin-color stratification operate in schools? Skin-color hierarchies reflect deeply held cultural beliefs about civility, modernity, sophistication, backwardness, beauty, and virtue (Ernst 1980; Morrison 1992; Smedley 2007). In Western culture, light skin and European facial features have been equated with the positive characteristics mentioned above (Drake 1987). In English and in Spanish, the terms ‘fair’ and ‘la guera’ mean both ‘light’ and ‘pretty’. The conflation of these meanings is just one example of a deeply held cultural value that European or white bodies are superior to others (Feagin and McKinney 2002). This gets translated in the classroom in particular ways. Teacher expectations exert a powerful influence on student achievement.

Explanation: A lot of research I previously found said that with colorism trends comes educational inequality and decreased likelihood of success. This article explains exactly how colorism can affect student education and discrimination in schools.

"This week Douglas Holt of Oxford University's Said Business School drew a parallel with the supply-chain problems that made Nike an ethical pariah. Just as consumers were disgusted by the fact that Air Jordans sold for $120 while Asian labourers produced the shoes in what amounted to slave-labour conditions, they will be equally disturbed by the fact that Starbucks is happy to sell coffee for $26 per pound while refusing to allow the coffee's producers a shot at climbing out of desperate poverty"

    Analysis:
Basically Starbucks wants to make all the profit. They do not want to let the Ethiopian government trademark three types of local coffee beans. Starbucks does not want the Ethiopian goernment to be represented. They claim that it could backfire and hurt farmers but I think they are "behind coffee-industry lobbying against the Ethiopian government."

  12. Topic: Discrimination in the media

    Appeals to Logos

Research: Discrimination from the media leads to the poisoning of people’s minds if they are not educated. People who are not properly educated are usually not able to think for themselves. They tend to believe and unintentionally learn from the news, which may state that “A local middle aged Caucasian man was attacked by an armed African-American that looked like he was in his early 20’s.” The person watching the news will now have the mindset that people of color are dangerous and the next time they walk past an African-American in their early 20’s there is chance that they will now be much more cautious around him because of what they read.

As I searched what discrimination is I came across this definition: “the difference of treatment between members of different groups when one group is intentionally singled out and treated worse, or not given the same opportunities.” The definition of this word goes on to state: “Over the years many forms of discrimination have come to be recognized including racial, gender, and sexual orientation.” This research also reveals that there has been a variety in the focus of discrimination within society as opposed to when people were only discriminated against because of their skin color. The media has implemented an ideology of discrimination within the mindset of its audience and now that has led to their audience discriminating against people unintentionally as a result of the meda’s released information.

In my last post, I did some background information on the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. So far, I am learning that there are differences between these terrorists groups that seem to be similar. For example, Some might see ISIS and Al-Qaeda as the same being that both are Muslim extremists. However, As I did more research I found out that both are not exactly the same. One is more extreme than the other.

    Research: (Appeal to Logos)

    URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_of_Iraq_and_the_Levant

"The United Nations has held ISIL responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes, and Amnesty International has reported ethnic cleansing by the group on a "historic scale". The group has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, India, and Russia. Over 60 countries are directly or indirectly waging war against ISIL.

The group originated as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, which was renamed Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn—commonly known as al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI)—when the group pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, AQI took part in the Iraqi insurgency. In 2006, it joined other Sunni insurgent groups to form the Mujahideen Shura Council, which shortly afterwards proclaimed the formation of an Islamic state, naming it the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). The ISI gained a significant presence in Al Anbar, Nineveh, Kirkuk and other areas, but around 2008, its violent methods, including suicide attacks on civilian targets and the widespread killing of prisoners, led to a backlash from Sunni Iraqis and other insurgent groups.[a]

The group grew significantly under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and after entering the Syrian Civil War, it established a large presence in Sunni-majority areas of Syria within the governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib, Deir ez-Zor and Aleppo.[42] Having expanded into Syria, the group changed its name in April 2013 to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), when al-Baghdadi announced its merger with the Syrian-based group al-Nusra Front. The group remained closely linked to al-Qaeda until February 2014, when after an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIL—citing its failure to consult and "notorious intransigence".[23][43]"

I feel that I can use this information to explain that there are differences between terrorist organizations. As mentioned above, what is now know as ISIS and Al-Qaeda used to be together. Until recently the two groups separated. I didn't post on here, but the two terrorist groups have completely different motives even though they seem to be parallel. Al-Qaeda is against what the United States' actions in forgein affairs and sees them as infidels. However, with ISIS it is different. ISIS want to proclaim themselves as the caliphate. This means that they want to be the supreme ruler of all Muslims. They also proclaim to be the successors of Muhammad. Another one of their motives is to humiliate the United States by killing their soldiers and hand their flag in the United States and commit actions against humanity. Overall, I can use ISIS to make the argument that not all terrorist groups are as radical and inhumane as them.

  14. Topic: International Adoption

Research: "In ten years, I never knew a child at Thornwell to die or be hospitalized for physical abuse or neglect or to simply "disappear" from supervision. In a well-run orphanage - such as Thornwell today - these events are not rare or inevitable. They simply do not happen or, if they do, the severity is much less and the duration is much shorter. Why? Because orphanages are, first and foremost, communities."

This research is based on an interview given to a former orphan from South Carolina. Although there is a steady decline in orphanages because they are not economical, there is a rise in foster care. The former orphan describes these institutes as safe, and one where a death or lack of child supervision is unheard of. Because of the small amount of current orphanages, Paul states that charities and religious groups join forces to ensure the best possible care for the children. However, the research does point out that there are flaws within the foster care system because the parents are in it for the money and not altruism. This research proves why several Americans are discouraged or take a different approach to adoption and do it internationally.

It explained how global warming can be something that happens because of natural causes.I think this could benefit my essay because it can help me rebuttal the counter arguments I might come up with. This research mainly focused on the green house gases meaning the natural gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide and how these gases affect the way the earth deflects the sun's radiation and keeps the earth at a warm temperature, so we do not freeze. In these video is also touched on some of the negative effects industrialization has on global warming. Also on how with global warming humans are noticing changes already, like hotter summers as well as longer and ice that would usually be permanently standing throughout the seasons melting at unexpected times.

  16. Topic: The debate over illegal immigration tends to focus on people crossing the Rio Grande, but that’s an incomplete picture. Mexicans make up only a narrow majority of unauthorized immigrants — 52 percent in 2012, according to Pew — and both their share and their absolute numbers have been falling. A small but growing share — around 12 percent — of unauthorized immigrants are from Asia.

Most of those Asian immigrants, and many Latin American immigrants as well, likely entered the country legally on tourist, student or other visas. A 2006 Pew study found that 40 percent to 50 percent of unauthorized immigrants entered the country legally and never left, as opposed to crossing the border illegally.

Since Mexican immigrants have, on average, been here"

I think that this gives another side to the typical crossing the border stories that arise when one thinks about undocumented immigrants. I can use this for my argument because it helps eliminate the stereotype of Latinos crossing the border. It shows that tourists from other countries get to the United States in different ways.

    1. I think what you have so far is really nice and a good direction to take your essay. If anything, I'd say have more evidence on why people stay in America in v the first place.

  17. Topic: NFL Stadium leads to gentrification

    Research: logos

“[P]laces like New York and San Francisco appear to be richer and more dazzling than ever.... But middle class city dwellers are being squeezed out by the rich as much, or more so, as by the poor, [they are] a casualty of high housing costs and the thinning out of the country’s once broad economic middle. The percentage of middle-income neighborhoods in metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington has dropped since 1970. In New York, the supply of apartments considered affordable to households with incomes like those earned by starting fire-fighters or police officers plunged by a whopping 205,000 in just three years, between 2002 and 2003.”

The loss of middle-income city residents has more impact on the poor who remain behind, making it harder for them to become homeowners, send their children to better schools, and make the kind of personal contacts that can be a route to better jobs.

Seattle is a prime example of this trend of middle class decline. Recently it was reported that Seattle had but one “affordable [middle class] neighborhood left,” the remote Georgetown- South Park area. Very few middle class European Americans or African Americans will be able to survive the upward soar of Central District housing prices. Instead, the community will be increasingly populated by high income “techies” and professionals of every race.”
McGee, Henry Jr. "Gentrification, Integration or Displacement?: The Seattle Story | The Black Past: Remembered and Reclaimed." Gentrification, Integration or Displacement?: The Seattle Story | The Black Past: Remembered and Reclaimed. Black Past, n.d. Web. 18 Feb. 2015. .

    Explanation:
I’m trying to find the moving rates of gentrified communities, but websites just give me examples of gentrified neighborhoods. Not only is the working class being displaced, but middle class residents are also being 'squeezed' out by the rich. When the middle class leave, its harder for the working class to be homeowners, send children to better schools, and make personal contacts.

  18. Topic: As I've dwelled deeper into the topic of taxing churches I've come across various articles explaining why churches should be taxed while most counter arguments do not offer much evidence.

Research:"Churches reap a vast array of tax advantages, even including special limits on IRS audit powers. See Special Rules Limiting IRS Authority to Audit a Church. With church status being so desirable, how does the IRS police it? The term “church” isn’t even defined in the tax code. See IRS Publication 1828, Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations. Yet the IRS looks for:"

I've dwelled deeper into the topic and not only have discovered that churches not only do not pay property taxes and that donations to churches are tax deductable but I have also learned that there are special laws in place preventing the IRS from auditing churches. This is completely irrational now there is no way to monitor what the church is doing with the money that they have. The gov. seems to be more limited than ever and it is so easy to pass something as a church. In the past hundreds of home owners by passed property taxes by saying that it was part of the church.

  19. Topic: Between the weeks, I'm alternating between the two time periods, trying to find evidence so that i can compare the two. This week, I have really a nice analysis of classical art itself.

Research :When used to refer to an aesthetic attitude, Classicism invokes those characteristics normally associated with the art of antiquity—harmony, clarity, restraint, universality, and idealism. Because of the high regard accorded to ancient art, “classic” is sometimes used to mean that the example is the best of its type (e.g., a classical example of a villa). By extension, “classic” is also sometimes used to refer to a stage of development that some historians and aestheticians have identified as a regular feature of what they have seen as the cyclical development of all styles. In such schemes the Classical phase is the moment at which the style is at its fullest and most harmonious expression; this phase is generally thought to follow a primitive or less completely realized phase and to precede a “mannered,” “baroque,” or “decadent” phase in which the style loses its original forcefulness and is sometimes meaninglessly elaborated. Phases of Western art history that intentionally imitate the antique example directly are usually called Neoclassical."

What this shows is interesting as it highlights how classical art is mainly considered to bea superior form of art for some reason while modern art is not as respected.

  21. Topic: Racism in criminal justice system

Research:"The American criminal justice system has shaped racial inequalities and been shaped by them. From 1619 until Emancipation, the vast majority of African Americans were enslaved. At Emancipation, approximately four million people were enslaved in the United States. This 250-year period saw the development of a system of laws and practices that often protected white people from conviction for crimes against African Americans. This legal system also regulated marriage and mobility in a restrictive manner for African Americans."

Well originally I was looking for a definition of criminal justice hoping to find something about what its suppose to do to rebuttal it but I found this quote. I knew about slavery and how laws protected white people but I never actually thought about how the criminal justice system was built around racism. So maybe I can use this as the opening to my essay.

  22. Topic: Cultural Appropriation
    Research:
"Thus, Eminem (or Marshall Mathers, as Als refers to him, getting underneath his persona) is not just a white boy appropriating black music, nor is appropriation a particularly clarifying lens. "To say, as many critics have," Als writes in one of the book's many provocative passages, "that whites steal from blacks who originate important work in music or fashion is beside the point. ... Unlike many of the whites he grew up with, Mathers never claimed whiteness and its privileges as his birthright because he didn't feel white and privileged.'"

While Eminem's work is not considered an appropriator by some, his feelings about race as well as privilege are skewed. As a white man, he benefits from the privileges allotted to that particular whether he thinks so or not. But that's beside the point. Eminem is removed from the category of rappers who appropriate black culture as he can fully understand the depth of the genres origins. He has struggled on his own and can actually relate.

  23. Topic: Teen mental illnesses are widely over looked. The symptoms of teen mental illness are easily detectable, but most parents and teachers write the issues off as ‘teenage drama’. This label has caused many teenagers to go untreated for their mental illnesses and the problems have worsened in adulthood.
Research: Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness present in a number of teenagers. The illness can cause serious mood changes. An individual could be happy one moment, depressed the next, or angry a few minutes later. This is vital to my argument because part of ‘teenage drama’ are mood swings. Adults assume teenagers go through a number of different phases and personalities trying to find themselves. Which they do, but when their moods are constantly changing, it’s not just teenagers experimenting trying to find their way. It’s a serious medical condition.
