Research Post 4 February 2, 2015

Dear Students,
Please read the directions below. Unless told otherwise, each of your research logs MUST follow the same instructions as seen below.

Directions:
The topic: Describe your topic and your initial thoughts on the topic, including your position and what you already know about the issue. As you continue on researching, describe your developing thoughts on the issues and what you are learning about the issue. Be sure to explain if your own position on the topic has changed. By week three, you will write a working thesis which considers your findings.

The Research: Post AND explain the research you have found on the topic (include the citation and URL). Explain how and/or why the research relates to your topic and how you plan to use the research in your essay (to refute, counterclaim, support, clarify, etc). You MUST label the research type your are presenting (e.g. appeal to logos comparison, appeal to ethos ethics, etc.).

Feedback: Offer feedback (at least 1 paragraph) to at least 2 of your classmates (maximum 3 comments per student). Respond to at least 1 comment/feedback on your research post.

  1. Topic: College Education. I wanted to talk about some statistics about how much an average student spends on college as suggested by Aaryn. I also wanted to discuss other factors, like other alternatives other than going to college as suggested by Ricardo.

Research: (Appel to logos) An average student total expenses can be about $11,000, 13 being the national ranking among all colleges and 25 being the nation ranking among public colleges...I also found other research where, a total cost per student in all colleges is $18,901, total cost in public schools is $15,698, total cost for private (not for profit)colleges is $27,443, and lastly, total cost for private (for profit) colleges is $9,284.

I want to talk about these rankings given above and give some explaining about why these numbers may not be convienet for an average person going to college. I plan on going on to other options besides college and discuss how that may be a better alternative. Although since my main goal is to argue how college is beneficial I will argue against other alternatives not involving going to college.

    1. I like that you're expanding and taking the suggestions others have given you. Using statistics will definitely add to your credibility. I think you could use the alternatives for college as part of your counter argument,

    2. In addition to what Lilian said, I think that the use of statistics will help you gain credibility, but you could also reference the source of your statistics in your argument essay for more credibility. I also want to remind you that there should not be any use of absolutes in your argument essay. For example, you said "a total cost per student in all colleges is $18,901..." and that implies that every single college will cost $18,901 regardless of where you go, which is false. You could try to counter yourself by talking about scholarships and grants to reveal that some students never had to pay for school, so it was worth it for them. Overall I like your topic and I am curious to see how the final product looks like.

    3. Feedback: I like that you are talking about the things that other people mentioned as feedback for you. I think that you are doing good research.Consider maybe talking about scholarships such as the Gates Millennium.

  2. Topic: Another new age archetype is the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. It may be of close relation to the Hummingbird, but it emphasizes whimsicality more. This archetype can be seen since the time of the Hepburns, but it has only been given a name in this present time.

Research (with appeal to logos): "She's a daffy, dazzling ray of sunshine. Her sole purpose is to enliven the hearts of those around her."

    1. I'm not exactly sure what your topic is, but I'm assuming that it's along the lines of the way women are viewed in society or media. If it is that or anything similar I believe that you are moving in the right direction to identify different personas given to women that make people think that these personalities are true of all women. I think you should continue to look for examples like this.

    2. I would have to agree with Shanel, I am not sure what is your topic. I am going to go with Shanel and think that you are writing about how men view the "perfect girl." If so, then you are going to right way. However, I think that you should address what a "pixie dream girl" is in the beginning of your essay because it might confuse some readers.

Overall, I think that you'll do good Lily.

  3. Topic:
I feel that I mentioned what the ideas and concept of terrorism are, but I feel that I need to explain how little attention people payed to the idea of terrorism in my paper.

Overall, my thoughts have changed a little during my research. I still think that terrorists are not only exclusive to the middle east, and that they are not motivated by a religion such as Islam with the example of ISIS.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_First!

"More powerful conflict parties, especially governments, generally succeed in labeling their more threatening (i.e., violent) opponents as terrorists, whereas attempts by opponents to label officially sanctioned violence as "state terrorism" have little chance of success unless supported by powerful third parties (e.g., the United Nations)."

I can use this to bolster the idea that terrorist attacks are only labeled as terrorist attacks when a big powerful country is threatened by a smaller sub-state.

I already explained the motives in a previous post but I can use this in my explanation that terrorists are not funded by a state. In fact, they fund themselves or receive aid from a third party.

"The United States has a long history of violence associated with political, labor, racial, religious, and other social and cultural conflicts (Gurr 1989). Assassinations, bombings, massacres, and other secretive deadly attacks have caused many thousands of casualties. Yet, few incidents have been defined as terrorism or the perpetrators as terrorists."

This is very important. I feel that I can use this to explain the misconception that many tend to have about terrorism; that it only involves middle-eastern countries that have Muslim extremists.

This can also be used to clear the name of terrorism, and that if any country that engages in any of these acts should be labeled as terrorist countries, even if they are as powerful as the United States.

". In official public usage, terrorism is far more likely to refer to incidents associated with agents and supporters of presumably foreign-based terrorist organizations such as al Qaeda than with the violence of home-grown militants acting in the name of such groups as the Animal Liberation Front, Earth First!, or the American Coalition for Life Activists (one of whose founders, Paul Hill, was executed in Florida on September 3, 2003, for murder, not terrorism)."

We tend to associate terrorism with groups such as Al-Qaeda rather than groups such as Earth First!

Earth first is a radical environmentalist advocacy group that wants to preserve the "Eco system". This group is responsible for sabotaging nuclear plants and one bombing and yet they have not been labeled as terrorists. This group has an extreme view point on a belief, they resort to violence in order to achieve or make that belief happen, similar to Al Qaeda. And yet, one is a terrorist while the other is seen as a radical organization. I know that I can use this to go against what common people think of when they hear the word terrorist.

    1. I definitely think that this is a step in the right direction for your topic. This reveals the underline problem that is located in the US's prejudice towards foreigners, which allows your audience to clearly see the unfairness of America's "democracy" towards people outside of the US. I suggest that you use that to connect it with a "conspiracy" of how the US is only interested in other countries for their oil and could care less about "spreading democracy"

PS: I hope my suggestions do not draw you away from your topic

    2. Feedback: Jose I am liking your evidence so far. It was nice that you talked about Earth first. Im sure that many people do not know who that group is or what they do. I dont know if you have mentioned the patriot act already, but if you havent consider adding that.

    3. You have very strong evidence. I liked how you described acts that should be considered terrorism based on the basic concepts and definition of terrorism, but also noted why it is not according to the U.S. perspective and standards, although they should be. It is important to note the prejudices that make people identify certain groups as terrorists compared to other equally violent, but most likely American, groups.

    Topic: Colorism
    Research:
Some of the colorism issues seem to have been carried over from Asia. One cannot travel long in Thailand and not be struck by the ubiquity of skin lightening lotions in markets and drug stores. In almost every country in Asia, the celebrity class, and especially movie stars, are noticeably lighter and taller, with more angular features, than the general population. V.S. Naipaul wrote about caste and colorism in India in his novel Half a Life. When protagonist Willie Chandron’s father decided to rebel against his Brahmin family, the most extreme form of protest he could make was to marry a dark-skinned woman of lower caste...His bride’s low caste and dark skin were associated in his mind with coarse features, poverty, lack of education, primitiveness, uncleanness, even ritual impurity. Willie’s grandfather “went wild. All his tolerance and kindness disappeared. He became heart-broken... his family associated Willie’s mother’s dark skin, and the dark skin she passed on to her children, with “shame”, a “taint”, “slyness”, and “polluting.”
Not every Asian country has had social hierarchies that have carried the intensity of India’s caste system, yet they all had long-standing preferences for light skin, especially in women. Japanese women have fled the sun, covered up, and used white pancake makeup for centuries.

    Explanation:
I wanted to note the similarities in colorism issues among different cultures, since it is primarily associated with African American people. This source illustrated how colorism is present in Asian and Indian societies. After reading this, I think I’ll also research how the beauty industry may cater to the continuation of colorism.

    1. Hi there Shanel, I just wanted to tell you that you have an interesting topic.

I think you can mention the cast system in India, I believe that it is still in use.
Also, I remembered that in Preciado's class she mentioned something similar to what you are going to research. I remember she stated that people of higher status tend to have lighter skin. For example, look at actors from tv shows and movies.

I am not sure if you want to bring up the fact that when the Spaniards came to Latin America, they arranged a whole system dedicated to one's skin color. If I remember correctly, only the women who were light skinned were able to marry wealthy Spanish men. Then there were those who were at the bottom simply because they had darker skin colors.

Overall, good evidence. I'm sorry if what I stated was a similar to what you researched, it just reminded me to what I learned in Preciado's class last year.

  5. Topic: My topic is how music is beneficial. Over my time doing research I have learned plenty of information regarding music and its benefits. I am getting numerous amounts of evidence in order to support my assertion.
    Research: (logos reasoning from authority…)
For this blog post I am using two videos from Asap SCIENCE. The two videos deal of course with music, one on how music helps improve athletic performance and the other on why music is addictive and pleasurable. The first video states that music causes a neurotransmitter in the brain called dopamine to be released. Dopamine is said to be, “a chemical responsible for making you ‘feel good’.” With dopamine present, pleasure is created. The video mentions that the drug, cocaine, stops the removal of dopamine which causes a continuous amount of pleasure. Furthermore the video states that music causes arousal that causes dilated pupils and increased blood pressure. Dopamine chemically alters our body and because of this music can become addicting.

The second video talks about how music is able to improve athletic performance. One way this is done is through synchronous music that is said to “coincide with repetitive movements that sports have.” This the video states to higher performance output. Music can narrow an athletes focus. The video goes on to mention other things that music is able to do to improve athlete performance.

  6. Topic: Discrimination in the media

Research: I wanted get back to my original topic of how the media discriminates against people by placing them in a stereotypical setting through the news that they choose to reveal to the public. During my research I was able to locate an article on how the negative effect of the media’s release of “information” led to a riot and outrage against the photos released while looking for suspected criminals.

“In August 2002, the Philadelphia Daily News ran a cover story about the number of fugitives who were wanted on murder charges. There were 41 blacks, 12 Hispanics, and 3 Asians with warrants out on them. No whites in Philadelphia were being sought at the time.

In typical tabloid fashion, the Daily News' cover featured mug shots of some of the suspects—15 pictures in all. Editors at the paper took pains to ensure that these photos were racially and ethnically "representative." But the preponderance of black faces sparked a furor, with a threatened protest march and boycott.
Journalism is a profession that prides itself on its maverick outspokenness and free-spirited regard for skepticism. Yet in today's climate, the subject of bias is practically a taboo, and those who want to raise the issue know better.” (Efforts to Fight Media Bias Against Minorities Are Misguided)

Through the excerpt from the database I found, it is very evident that the news attempts to release information in ways that they think are helpful, but there becomes a large chance that their attempt to help becomes viewed as offensive or it is rebuked for its classification of “racist”. I think that there has to be a massive change in the way that the media chooses to distribute its news. I plan on going into detail of how in my next post.

  8. Topic: Undocumented Immigrants

Research (Appeals to Logos):In March 2006, 52% of respondents said, "Immigrants today are a burden because they take jobs [and] housing." Perhaps the key change in five years is that fewer people were undecided. In 2000, 12% of respondents could not choose between immigrants as a burden or blessing (responded "don't know"). By 2006, only 7% were undecided.

This evidence shows how American's view immigrants. Some American's view immigrants as a burden on other Americans because they take jobs, housing, and other things like welfare. However, in my opinion, I believe that immigrants take the jobs that Americans are unwilling to take. That is why I believe people change their opinion from think immigrants to be a burden to being undecided. However, since the number of immigrants was growing, then they were more resentful. Also, I think that the stereotypes that come with immigrants help sway their opinion. Some Americans might not encounter or form an acquaintance with an immigrant to get to know their story; they might only fall into the stereotypes.

  9. Topic: Corporations Exploitation of Workers
Since my last post I have learned that many workers can not organize a union without risking their job position.

    Research:

"For adults worldwide, resistance to unionization by big corporations militates against fair labor practices. Again, Wal-Mart serves as an example in the United States. When 10 butchers at a store in Jacksonville, Fla., voted to join a union, Wal-Mart simply eliminated their jobs by shipping in precut meats. A more far-reaching step was taken in Canada. When workers at a store in Quebec moved toward unionization, the whole store was closed down."

So far I have found that in some countries people are given the right to form a union however they risk their job position if they do. For example in this case Walmart made sure to fire the people who voted to join a union by simply eliminating their jobs. In other countries like Canada they sometimes prefer to close down a store. Other foreign countries do not give employers the right to form a union. I still need to find information on why countries don't let them.

  11. Topic: Racism in criminal justice

Research: "Blacks are extraordinarily skeptical that the system can be fair, while whites see the system as essentially color blind."

This quote can possibly be used in the counter argument portion in my essay. I can talk about how some people believe that the criminal justice system in America is color blind, meaning that its not singling out certain races and that its completely fair.

" On average, 70 percent of blacks, but only 17 percent of whites, considered these serious problems. And the courts were not immune from such skepticism, either: while about 25 percent of whites disagreed with the statement that the “courts give all a fair trial,” more than 60 percent of African Americans disagreed."

This evident show the percentage how many African Americans and Whites think about the issue. The percentages show that more Africa Americans think the criminal justice system is unfair. The reason for this is because of different experiences people have with the criminal justice system.

"We found that African Americans, especially younger black men, were far more likely than whites to report being treated unfairly by the police because of their race. In fact, a recent Gallup Poll found that one of every four black men under age 35 said that the police have treated them unfairly during the last 30 days."

  14. Topic: Prostitution
Research: Prostitution in many places is illegal. Prostitution is illegal for many obvious reasons such as crime and violence . But my research has been should prostitution become legal? if it becomes legal , maybe that way it could be seen in a more positive light. So far Nevada is the only state in the US that allow some legal prostitution.
    * (appeal to logos)
"Proponents of legalizing prostitution believe it would reduce crime, improve public health, increase tax revenue, help people out of poverty, get prostitutes off the streets, and allow consenting adults to make their own choices."

This research I have found will help me because it is evidence that we should make prostitution legal because it can benefit everyone. It may be an inappropriate career but if they(women or men) choose prositution as a career it shouldnt be seen as a crime , it should be recognized as a real job. If prostitution became legal there is a possibility that it will be taxed by the government which can benefit the people of the country.

    Research: Appeal to Pathos

" Zoos, whether rural or urban, are an abomination and nothing more than animal cruelty. As a hunter, fisherman and lifelong outdoor enthusiast during my 65 years, I recall, when my family and I, on vacation in Vermont in the mid-1980s, stopped at one of these out-of-the way, three-acre zoos. While the rest of my family went off to explore, I found myself sitting in front of a caged hyena who paced to and fro for over an hour. The desperation in the hyena's eyes (and they are not pretty eyes to look at) has left an indelible memory in my mind and convinced me that the mere existence of zoos is wrong."
This research will benefit my essay because it comes from a different point of view. All the other sources have been scientist and animal activists. This is a testimony of a journalist who happen to take his family on a trip to the zoo, and realized the horrors of it.

At the beginning my topic was on why hunting is good for the environment but when I did further research on the topic I got bored, so I changed it to immigration.
My first source that I found is from BBC.com, the article talks about what are the pros and cons of immigration in the United States.
It states on the pros section, " Some states (like California and Texas) rely on the cheap labour that immigrant workers provide - especially in tourism and agriculture" .
This quote is significant because it is stating that if we open our borders to immigrants , agricultural states will benefit because there will be a lot of workers willing to work in the farms or other cheap labor. With a lot of workers willing to work for cheap labor , our economy will increase because our products will increase at a faster rate since we have tons of workers

  18. Topic- Mermaids exist!

Research(Logos, reasoning from comparison)- “Little Shiloh Pepin has sirenomelia or "mermaid syndrome", a rare birth condition where her legs have been fused together at birth. In most cases, persons born with sirenomelia die at birth, or get surgery to separate the fused legs. Shiloh has defeated the odds in making it to her eighth birthday.”

I would be using this piece of information to defend my argument that mermaids exist. Through out my research I came across this very inspiring video, Shiloh, an 8 year old girl was born with sirenomeli which is more commonly known as mermaid syndrome. Basically, Shiloh has no organs, or parts of her body from the waist down, such as no vagina, or large instinstants. A rare disease in which only 5 other people are known to have. Unlike most people Shiloh is well educated about her condition and isn’t afraid to speak out about it which is why she personally refused to have surgery, separting her legs. She is literally a true inspiration, and for her age she has alot of courage, knowing that she could be alive for a “short” amount of time. I feel that because of her condition, just as humans lose their “tails” while inside the mother's womb, this could be connected to mermaid syndrome.

The research I found can help me strengthen my argument. This evidence explains how certain human activities like cutting down forest is making our earth hotter contributing to global warming. The Research: "Of all the changes the Task Force will address, the single most important operational improvement will be to introduce safeguards similar to the Hague Convention process for American adoptive parents as quickly as possible in certain more problematic countries. We are calling this the "adjudicate orphan status first" initiative."

This research shows the importance of the Hague Convention and the security it gives to prospective adoptive parents. The Hague Convention is a safeguard for international adoption. Some countries are apart of this committee, and others are not which means that not all international adoptions are secure. And "secure" means that the adoptees are in actual orphanages or willingly put up for adoption by one or two parents. The Hague Convention has become critical because countries that are not apart of it, do not have regulations and put up for adoption kidnapped children.

  23. My Topic: Suicide in Youth
So far my topic has a lot of factors and trends that can go into my argument essay. So far I know that most of the issues with suicide prevention is that campaigns target the same group or generalize the campaign too far that it doesn’t really impact anyone. Also I have learned campaigns leave out certain age groups. I want start looking how social media affects the cycles in suicide like the economy does.
My Research: Appeal to Pathos with Reasoning
“Epidemic” is the word many are using to describe the suicide due to cyber-bullying. The term cyber-bullying is something that many still don’t fully understand due the timeliness of cyber-bullying. This new form of bullying is driving even the ordinary teenagers who were not on the suicide prevention campaign’s target. This rises a new dilemma for suicide prevention to solve for. Comments online can come from anyone and be directed to anyone also being anonymous so it’s hard to blame someone. Suicide rate have gone up to to cyber-bullying, with people commenting “go kill yourself” on someone’s social media profile and get away with it. This is unfortunately a factor that till this day we can’t control according to Doucet. “ The statistics are that "one in three people aged between 11 to 17 are cyber bullied, with girls three times more likely. It goes to school with you, it comes home with you, it goes in the shower with you, it goes everywhere you go." This is the problem of cyber-bullying and suicide, in order to bring the suicide rates due to cyberbullying down, suicide campaign would also have to target cyber-bullying. This can add to my argument essay by developing factors in which the youth has dealt which drives them to commit suicide.

  24. Topic: Cultural Appropriation
    Research: (Logos)

"Sometime in 1953, Sun Records producer Sam Philips had the following thought: "If I could get me a white boy with that black sound, I could make a million dollars." The rest is cultural history--or is it?

Today, black culture is being assimilated (or annexed, depending on your point of view) by white people: white rappers like Kid Rock and Eminem, white designers like Tommy Hilfiger, white actors like Danny Hoch, and white directors like James Toback (Black and White).

orty-three years later, blacks are back at the heart of hipness. This time, however, complexities abound. For one thing, black culture is far more conflicted, the religious and economic undergirding of postwar Jim Crow culture having fallen victim to time, economics, Reaganism, and the drug trade. And white culture is much more conflicted about blacks, particularly in light of such post-Reagan spectacles as the L.A. riots, the O.J. Simpson trial, and the nightly parade of perp walks we see on TV. Worse still, blacks have capitalized on this morbid fascination. Hip-hop started out, like blues or R&B, as a local black music, invented in the Bronx for entertainment purposes only. It only attracted a large white audience after a West coast version emerged much later, which promised the very angst and romanticized criminality beloved by white audiences. Ice T and NWA (Niggaz With Attitude) provided white audiences, in other words, with the very things Norman Mailer had claimed they wanted in "The White Negro." D MX is a "pychopath" in a way Chuck Berry never was; Mailer's essay, it turns out, was prescient by its very wrongness."

Most of the backlash artists, who delve into a genre away from their inherent culture, receive tends to have to do with race. Much of it is due to the origin of the genre and/or the "credit" the originators rarely ever receive. However, this is not to say people are not free to become with other genres. The only stipulation is that they must respect it and then try not to imitate it down to the most minuscule detail. Sia artists have to make a place for themselves within the genre rather than building off of experiences they have never undergone.

From here I plan to look into socioeconomic factors and its ties to cultural appropriation as well as the way companies (executive heads) choose to exploit certain cultures.

I chose this topic because a great deal of people believe that the ancient myths of the world are nothing but the over active imagination of the people that lived in those time periods. I think that a lot of the myths are based on truth and have connections to human life.

    Research: logos
In many ancient cultures, depictions of half human half animal monsters are not uncommon. If one were to look at all the ancient religions of Europe and Asia they would find would find that some of these creatures were very similar. And each creature had some connection to the animals of great importance of each culture. For example, the Minotaur in greek mythology was shown to have the head of a bull and the body of a large powerful man. In Greece, the bull was shown as male power and strength. In Africa, the sphinx is to have said to have infinite wisdom. Egyptian religion shows lions to hold all the wisdoms of the world. And so on and so forth.

I think the only concern with lowering the percentage is how will the citizens take it. Not that they want more accidents to happen but just for the fact that they love to drink. Also not only that but how will the laws change, will the age change too. This is a whole governmental issue also.

  27. Topic: NFL Stadium leads to gentrification

    Research:
“THE CHICAGO BOARD OF EDUCATION has closed or is planning to shut down up to 70 schools. At the same time, 100 new schools are scheduled to open under the city's Renaissance 2010, a project spearheaded by Mayor Richard M. Daley and the Commercial Club of Chicago, and funded in part by $50 million from the private sector. Critics of Ren2010, as it is often called, see a disturbing link between the project and gentrification. The "failing" schools targeted for closing are almost all in poor communities of color. Since 90 percent of Chicago public school students qualify for subsidized lunches, and the student body as a whole is mostly Black and Latino.
The city's controversial 1995 school policy is widely considered to have been a model for the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act. Under the initial policy, Chicago schools labeled as "failing" were put on probation. With Ren2010, two-thirds of the new schools are charter and contract schools, employing non-union teachers and granting a high degree of flexibility in curriculum and focus. Chicago Public Schools spokesman Malon Edwards said any individual or organization could propose a new school. Priority is supposed to be given to community residents at the new schools, but the contract and charter schools can also accept students from across the city and institute performance-based entrance criteria, which could easily sideline local students who have been relegated to sub-par schools thus far.”

    Explanation:
A great number of public school that are seen as “failing” schools, mostly made up of Latino and Black students, are being shut down and are being replaced by new schools. These schools were shut down by the new comers of gentrification, contributing to a private sector to create more sub-urburn schools for their children. Community residents have first priority to these schools, but not charter or contract schools.

  29. Topic: Classical art in the modern Era. Insofar, I have only looked at the characteristics of classical art. This week, I decided to move more into the modern setting to find inspiration.
The first modern artist to essentially stand on his own in this regard was Gustave Courbet, who in the mid-nineteenth century sought to develop his own distinct style. This was achieved in large part with his painting from 1849-1850, Burial at Ornans, which scandalized the French art world by portraying the funeral of a common man from a peasant village. The Academy bristled at the depiction of dirty farm workers around an open grave, as only classical myths or historical scenes were fitting subject matter for such a large painting. Initially, Courbet was ostracized for his work, but he eventually proved to be highly influential to subsequent generations of modern artists. This general pattern of rejection and later influence has been repeated by hundreds of artists in the modern eraModern Art. [Internet]. 2015. TheArtStory.org website. Available from:
    http://www.theartstory.org/definition-modern-art.htm [Accesed 04 Feb 2015]

What's interesting about this is that it indicates an openness that was nonexistent in the classical art world. In the past if your art did not follow specific criteria, it was not considered art. Today, anything a person can think to imagine is art. It is an important distinction.

  30. Topic: My topic regards Gay Marriage. Over the years, gay marriage has started to be a bigger deal throughout world am I feel that as time continues, gay marriage will have a stronger impact on the world. Personally I am ok with gay marriage because i find no reason to separate a couple if they are in love. I am Catholic and according to the Catholic religion and Christians I believe, although theses are both the same thing, we should be against Gay Marriage because the God stated in the bible that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The only problem I would have with a male gay marriage or a male gay person would be if they begin to seek interest in me.

    Research:
"Even if gay marriage were harmful, the equality and dignity of gay couples should be respected, though it's not true, or at least not demonstrable, that gay marriage would be harmful. On the contrary, there are good reasons to think that legalized gay marriage would benefit us all. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that people who marry tend to be better off financially, emotionally, psychologically, and even medically."

    Citation:

Cline, Austin. "Moral and Social Arguments for Gay Marriage." N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2015.

What this quote is saying is that gay people don't harm anyone. As much as certain individuals claim they hate and are against gays, they aren't actually being harmed by them. Gay people aren't harming anyone because their just trying to live their life with their preferred mate. Now if a gay hurts someone or breaks the law then he should be treated the same as anyone else should and in terms of prison, he would be sent to an all male prison of course. If we look closely to a gay person we know, i believe it is true that they indeed live a very happy life; maybe even happier than a straight couple may. It is proven that gay couple tend to live better in society in many aspect such as the ones listed above. I'm not advocating everyone turn gay now, Im just saying that if they improve our economics in a way, then it adds to my argument on why gay marriage should be allowed.

  31. Topic: Privilige in America

First and foremost: What are privileges? How do they work?
Definition: a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
There are many forms of privileges, all of them are given to you by society through the way you’re perceived or/and are identified on paper. You have privileges for a lot of different things, there are privileges based on class, wealth, education, skin color, religion, sex (or gender), age, social status (which is usually associated with class, but not always), etc… These privileges can differ enormously from region and another, you can’t expect getting the same treatment everywhere. As well as differ in different situations.

For example, male privilege. Every human born a male, has male privilege. However, there's a system in male privilege that gives people of lighter skin/white people more privileges and rights then people of color. Most men do not realize that they have male privilege. Male privilege is to walk down the street and not be harassed, subjected, objectified by strangers on your appearance or body figure. Male privilege is to be able to walk at night and not fear of getting raped. I think you have an idea of what im saying. male privilege is rooted in misogony and the misogynistic society we live in. One way to destroy misogamy is to realize male privilege and understand feminist ideals that benefit both genders.

    Research: Appeal to Pathos

"Yes, we should all be feminists, but too often we believe that the plight of the oppressed is solely the business of the oppressed, and that the society in which that oppression is born and grows and the role of the oppressors and beneficiaries are all somehow subordinate.
    Wrong.

Fighting female objectification and discrimination and violence against women isn't simply the job of women; it must also be the pursuit of men.

Only when men learn to recognize misogyny will we be able to rid the world of it. Not all men are part of the problem, but, yes, all men must be part of the solution.

Men around the world, in general, do not have to worry as much, if at all, about being the subjects of such physical and psychological violence. They have the luxury of not being forced to fully engage and confront the scale and scope of the problem -- and that is the very definition of privilege"
