  1. NFL Stadium leads to gentrification:
With the upcoming stadium in Inglewood, the future influx of wealthy visitors with cause great negative effects towards the community. Gentrification is when middle and upper class residents move into a poor income areas. I believe the stadium will not benefit the people in Inglewood because of the increase of costs for families, and the diminishing of rich black and brown culture.
1.“ House prices and down payment requirements have become inflated to the point where buying any sort of home in the city is a pipe dream for your average middle-class single person or young couple. These buyers, who are more inclined to care about proximity to restaurants and theatres than big yards, good schools and nearby playgrounds. Add to that low interest rates and minimal down payments, and suddenly a whole new breed of homebuyer is pulled out of the rental market and into the world of mortgages and home equity.”

Housing prices rise for people wanting to buy homes. New incoming people move in not for the space, schools, or parks; new wealthy residents move in for the sites and new shopping centers. Homes will no longer sell in rent, but will only be given to those who pay more money upfront. This information will support my sub-claim on higher living expenses and will help clarify my point on the negative effects of gentrification. This information appeals to logos ethics.

    1. I think that you have a really good topic, and I really liked that it dealt with our community. I liked that you defined Gentrification, because I had no idea what that was. I think that your findings thus far could help your position. You could maybe talk about how the building of the stadium was not built with the tax dollars of the community (I believe) as a possible counter argument.

    2. I think you have an interesting topic Marlene, Like Ricardo, I liked how you defined what gentrification is. I think you should consider the amount of jobs it will provide, and come up with a way to counter that claim. Also, the building of the stadium can be seen as a good thing by some, since it will make the city unique. You can also come up with another way to counter that in your paper by explaining how our city is already unique and adding the stadium will get rid of the unique culture we have. You can also mention the incentives that the people who want the stadium, are they monetary or non-monetary?

Overall, nice topic. I think you'll do great.

    3. Response to Jose:
I agree on researching more on the counter-arguments on the opposite side. I was planning to overturn the "benefits" of the stadium by finding a source that supports my claim.

  2. 2.“From the mid-1990s until the last few years, the violence and crime deterred middle-class Washingtonians from planting stakes in the area. But as real-estate prices soared..
I'm not surprised to see fresh paint on buildings that were once peeling. It doesn't shock me that the old tennis and basketball courts have been leveled to make way for town houses, or that the gully filled with earth, trees and trash next to the basement apartment where I was raised has given way to new homes.
Now what used to be an undesirable neighborhood has become unaffordable for many of the people who grew up with me. Most of my friends who still live in the area have been forced into Prince George's County as rent and mortgage prices are now far beyond what they can afford.”

Jasper describes the effects of gentrification in his community. He describes the influx of prices on homes, and how the living expense cost have become unaffordable. Jasper also describes how recreation centers and building in his community are being renovated for the sake of the new comers. I will use this source to explain how the new infrastructure is not being built for the people already living there, but for the wealthy. This information appeals to pathos.

    1. I really like the overall topic that you chose to research on and how you chose to research the effects that gentrification has had in other communities. I feel like this will strengthen your paper a lot more because your not only including what could happen to our city but you are also providing examples of what has happened already in other places. I also like how looked for information that appealed to pathos and logos.

    2. I think that your topic gives you a lot of opportunity to play on pathos. You can use anecdotes to make readers feel related to your topic and I think it will strengthen your argument instead of detracting from it. The only thing is that it can be argued that there are many economic benefits to the city with having more attractive resources and higher priced housing, so I think you’ll need to emphasize how what you’re arguing outweighs the economic benefits aside from facts like that people have lived here their entire lives and feel a connection to the place, etc.. although that should be noted as well. I think it’ll make your argument even more persuasive if you’re able to refute claims of economic benefits with sound evidence against it.

  3. 3.“ People who share traditions - whether that's Shabbat or brunch - can participate in them more easily if they live near each other. Community can also be an important safety net: One of the most famous efforts at desegregation, the Moving To Opportunity initiative of the 1990s, found that many public housing residents who were relocated to suburban areas lost access to child care, transportation or other informal services that close-knit friends or family had provided in their old neighborhoods.
While this argument applies to many different kinds of communities, it can be particularly powerful for racial minorities. In part, that's because most American cities are so segregated that it can be difficult to balance community and isolation. While a Jewish person, say, may be able to find a part of town where Jews make up enough of the residents to create a strong community, but not so many that the area feels isolated from other kinds of people, the same is not necessarily true for Latinos, or especially for blacks. So while studies suggest that the average African-American might like to live in a neighborhood that's about half black, they're unlikely to find that kind of middle ground.
There's also the issue of safety. In a country where racism remains rampant, moving to an area where whites are a large majority may increase your odds of being a target of anything from petty humiliations at a convenience store to a catastrophic encounter with a frightened, and armed, neighbor. As one woman wrote to me after I published a piece on Chicago's black middle class,”

Some effects of gentrification can be an increase of segregation between the high and lower classes. Yes, racism is still an ongoing problem. But, classes will compare each other and cause controversy within the community. This research r3lates to my topic because I want to focus on how gentrification is a battle between the low and high class and how it can possibly lead towards the beginning of racism. This information is an appeal to logos reason.

  4. The topic: My topic is a broad topic as of now, but the focus is on music and its different effects on people. Specifically the benefits and negatives that are caused by music to the brain or other major organs. The reason that I chose this topic is that I have heard numerous times that music helps people to focus when reading. This caused to want to research why it is that this happens and why music does other things similar to this.

    The Research: (Logos-reasoning from authority...)
This article informs of a boy, Jimmy Miller, who at a young age was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). This disorder is referred to as a mild form of autism, that causes problems with communicating and interacting with others. Miller underwent a series of therapies to counter certain aspects of his disorder and one of the therapies consisted of the use of music. The type of therapy used is known as rhythmic entrainment, “defined as techniques which utilize the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunction due to neurological disorder or disease,” the article goes on to say that “all protocols are based on a neuroscience model of music perception and the influence of music on functional changes in nonmusical brain and behavior functions.” This therapy saw an increase in motor skills for Miller. The article notes that, “ Generally, the playing of a musical instrument will focus the attention of an individual. Young clients with severe autism who pay no attention to verbal cues will tend to visually focus on a facilitator playing an instrument in front of them” This means that music helps to facilitate focused attention. The article goes more in depth with the therapy. This article helps to showcase one of the many benefits music has on the brain. Because of this I will use this article in order to support my assertion.

    1. Hi there Ricardo, you have a very nice topic. Based off the research you have of right now, I think that it is good. I would recommend to look for more information that is similar to it.

Since you are not sure of your topic right now, it is hard to come up with counter arguments. However, take into consideration the idea that music can harm the brain or the function of other systems. Or, how it can affect the way people behave, then you would have to look for some physiological studies of that.

Overall, interesting topic. And you'll do great.

    2. Thanks for the feedback Jose. I agree with your idea, maybe I could do it on how music can cause people to be permanently deaf. Thanks again.

    3. I really like your topic as well. I have often listened to teachers say that classical music helps students focus and I would like to learn if that is actually true.

So far your research looks pretty good. I like how you found an example of someone who has actually benefited from the use of listening music. It would be good if you now found some of the negatives that are caused by music to the brain.

    4. I agree with Ana with the classical music idea, I think that you should talk about the different genres of music and how they each have a different affect on a individual. I liked you evidence as well because it supports your idea that music does have its benefits. I think your main goal should be based on appeal to logos and ethos.

    5. Hey Ricardo I think you have a really interesting and unique topic. I think you can tie it in to how milions are spent yearly on therapy or medication that can realy be harming poeple. You can also maybe talk about mental institutions and their techniques. I agree that music is more beneficial than most people think it can be.

    6. I also think your topic is interesting. Most people have mixed opinions if music actually helps us through a time of stress or focus. It mostly determines on the person and their preference to the music they enjoy in order to focus or to keep themselves calm at the time.

  6. My Topic: Corporations Exploitation of Workers
I chose to conduct research on this topic because I have read on numerous occasions that huge corporations like the Coca Cola Company and Nike exploit their workers in order to maximize their profit. From what I know companies have found a way to get away from tight regulations in the United States by using cheap labor in places like South East Asia.

    The Research:
"Free trade, workers charged, is designed to make it easier for transnational corporations to produce in Mexico under low-wage conditions and export back to the US and Canada. Workers in the US and Canada said they fear job losses and pressure to accept reduced pay and working conditions in order to compete with Mexican conditions, while Mexican workers fear they will continue to receive a small fraction of US or Canadian wages...According to Raul Escobar, elected leader of the Mexican Ford Workers Democratic Movement, Companies like Ford come to Mexico to exploit workers, pay low taxes, and avoid environmental regulation. Wages at the Cuautitlan plant average less than $60 per week, he said. There is only one break each eight-and-a-half hour shift."

This research relates to my topic because it shows how the exploitation of workers has been happening for years with famous corporations like Ford. They make the strategic decision to produce in foreign countries in order to pay their workers less money. For example a person in the US can be winning $90 dollars a day while a worker in Mexico can be winning that in a week. This greatly helps the corporations to maximize their profits because they "exploit workers, pay low taxes, and avoid environmental regulation." No wonder why many corporations are moving jobs overseas, its because of the money. Furthermore they are violating US regulations in Mexico by providing workers with only "one break each eight-and-a-half hour shift." This also brings up an entire different issue of how little workers are payed in the US but also in foreign countries. I plan to use this article to support the fact that corporations exploit their workers in foreign countries.

    1. You have good evidence but maybe you should also consider that there is an issue in foreign governments since they don't have labor laws against this exploitation, which is the reason why U.S. businesses go overseas. I think you should propose and argue for a solution to the problem and not just inform readers of it. But I think you have a good start with this evidence.

    2. I think your topic is really interesting and you are using good evidence. I think that if you incorporate the two ideas of "nike" and "coca cola" it would make your essay relate to the reader more because they are popular companies. I also like how you are relating the labor conditions from today to the past.

    3. I really found some interest in your topic Ana because in the year of 2015 who would of thought exploitation from major companies was occurring. I also agree with Shanel foreign governments do have different polices so you should look into that. Also will you just specify in U.S or outside of the U.S.

    4. Ana I really like the topic you chose because it is absolutely an argument that should be valued more than it currently is. This topic also reminds me of Preciado's class when she introduced this topic of worker exploitation and outsourcing that you include with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. I am sure your paper will turn out great because there is an abundance of sources that can support your argument.

    5. I like the companies you've chosen to use for research. I think you can branch out to all over the world because of how common exploitation is in certain areas (specifically undeveloped areas). I think you can also include Walmart and Forever 21 as research.

  7. Topic: What is terrorism?
Terrorism is something that is in the news since the tragic event in September 11 of 2009. I know that terrorism is a current issue in the world right now, especially in the the eastern hemisphere of the world. With recent tragedies such as the attack of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the rise of the radical muslim group, I.S.I.S taking over land in the Middle-east. As of right now, my view on terrorism is a bit unclear. I feel that it is unnecessary and radical since from what I have seen, many attacks are motivated because others have certain beliefs than what another group has..

    The Research:(Logos-reasoning,
As of right now, I found a research paper that has multiple references on the topic of terrorism. I plan to use this other paper in order to get ideas, and use it’s references to clarify and support what terrorism actually is. Within this paper, it explains what are the incentives of terrorists and what actions do they do. The paper states that terrorists often resort to bombing since it proves to be effective. It goes further into depth saying that terrorists will utilize bombing more since technology is advancing. It also states that terrorist often kidnap and abduct in order to finance their group to buy materials that they need.

This paper then brings up terrorism as a since of freedom fighting. There are examples of a corrupt government and a small group that wants to overthrow that government. An example from the paper would be the foreign fighters and Afghan fighters waging jihad against the Soviet Union when they invaded their country

(Tuschl, Editor: Ronald H. "EPU Research Papers." EPU Research Papers(2009): 1-16. Feb. 2009. Web. 27 Jan. 2015.)

There is also the book, " A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn that has a chapter dedicated to terrorism. I am unable to cite the exact chapter because I do not have the book with me right now. But I remember within the chapter that Howard Zinn talked about a terrorist having morals. Terrorists are labeled amoral, meaning that they do not posses any morals. But Howard Zinn clarifies this by stating that they do have morals by stating that terrorists do not accept the young, elderly, physically an mentally handicap individuals in the group.

    1. I think your topic will lead to a very interesting essay. There is the wrong year but I knew what you meant. I think your evidence will make your essay strong. The Zinn chapter you are referring to, is it the one that gave the list of what makes a terrorist? If it is that could be a very good source. Good job Jose.

    2. Thank you Ricardo.
In the Zinn chapter, it talked about what are the incentives of terrorists. How they are a sub-state and how that their attacks have to be symbolic. I cannot on into further detail because I do not have the book with me right now.

    3. Hello Cruz,

I agree with Ricardo about your topic; It seems like it will be very interesting. Moreover, I like how you managed to incorporate the Zinn book with what we your project, I remember that chapter pretty well and it will definitely provide ample research. Furthermore, this was also a lesson we covered in one of our history classes, so that background knowledge will certainly be useful to you. Perhaps you can use actual recent events (I.E., the rise of ISIS, Charlie Hebdo, etc.) to further your topic.

    4. Pikachu, I really like how you posed the question, "What is terrorism?" because it broadens the possibilities you can take in terms of what is and what is not considered terrorism. If this helps, you can include some information that Otto gave us last year about those seven (if I'm correct) reasons to label some sub-state's action as terrorism. And also introduce the opposing perspectives that support and disagrees with what is labeled as terrorism.

    5. I think your topic is perfect, it is prominent and will soon have a great affect on us due to the fact that by next year we will all be adults that pay taxes. I think what can help your essay is if you talk about the history of terrorism and really dig deep, for example how Osama Bin Laden being trained by the CIA. I also think it would be important if you offer to perspectives maybe one that differs from that of Howard Zinn.

  8. 1.) My topic for this project is "Classical Art in the Modern Era". When I first thought about this topic, I didn't know that I would be arguing a point on a specific topic; it was just something that I wanted to write about. As I've applying to more and more art programs and schools, I've been reading more and more art books than I might've in the past. Most of these books showcased a more modern kind of art, i.e.,comic book art styles, surrealistic art styles, etc. While these art styles were all well and good, I noticed that, when compared to the classical art, they were often considered to fall short. This can be for a number of reasons: art in ancient times was, too my knowledge, was always determined by quality and social class, rather than monetary value or clever messages; the images were meant more to reflect the famous stories of the time or the wealth/status of the subject. As I look more into the subject, I hope to find a certain pattern or distinction that , in general elevates or simply separates classical art and modern art.

    1. 2.) Research
Although the high point of Classical expression was short-lived, it is important to note that it was forged during the Persian Wars (490–479 B.C.) and continued after the Peloponnesian War (431–404 B.C.) between Athens and a league of allied city-states led by Sparta. The conflict continued intermittently for nearly thirty years. Athens suffered irreparable damage during the war and a devastating plague that lasted over four years. Although the city lost its primacy, its artistic importance continued unabated during the fourth century B.C."

Citation:Hemingway, Colette, and Seán Hemingway. "The Art of Classical Greece (ca. 480–323 B.C.)". In Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History. New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2000–. http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/tacg/hd_tacg.htm (January 2008)

As of now, it's still hard to find research for my topic. I still have to narrow down the exact parameters for my topic (i.e., decide what exactly constitutes classical and modern art) and find viable sources to back up these definitions. Nevertheless, this piece of evidence is interesting in that it suggests a correlation between war and artistic growth. I cannot conclude that one causes the other at this point, but it is certainly an angle worth exploring. Perhaps the changing nature of warfare happened to change art along with war itself? For now, however, this is simply an interesting piece to note. If it does work it's way into my essay, I believe it qualifies as Logos-(consequence).

      Delete
    2. I am still not sure what exactly you are arguing for. Are you arguing that classical art should be just as valued as modern art? I feel you are on the right track of defying what exactly is classical and modern art. Maybe for background history you can explain how the audiences shift of art changed.

      Delete
    3. I like the topic you've chosen because it exemplifies how art can still be translated through time. I think you should use the databases for the history on the Classical time period and its works but use Google for the modern aspects. Also, try to explain what qualities are being taken from one period to the next.

I think you're argument is that there is evidence to suggest that the Classical period is still living and breathing in the modern age.

  10. The topic: My topic is broad as of now, but the idea aroused after watching a documentary on the adoption policies in India. It described the corruption that takes play during the process and the effects it has had on society. I've always felt that adoption inside and out of the U.S was something beneficial to minors. After conducting research I've realized that the systems within many third world countries must be changed.

The research: (Appeal to logos) "Perhaps the largest and fastest growing concentration of orphans is in sub-Saharan Africa, where civil war, poverty, and disease are taking an enormous toll on the population. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to over forty-eight million orphans, one-fourth of them orphaned by the AIDS virus. While the total number of orphans in Latin America and Asia has decreased since 1990, the number in sub-Saharan Africa has increased by more than 50% in that same period. An estimated 12% of all children in the area have lost at least one parent, and in eight countries, this number reaches more than 15%. More than half of these children are under the age of twelve, and while many children who lose one parent continue to live with the surviving parent, this is not always the case. Recent data from seven sub-Saharan countries indicate that between 56% and 65% of children who lose their fathers continue to live with their mothers, and only between 25% and 52% of children who lose their mothers continue to live with their fathers."

This research relates to my topic because it demonstrates one of the circumstances that lead to adoptions. In the country of Africa, AIDS is a growing devastating problem and has left many children without any caregivers. This research supports my topic because it gives an insight into conditions that other nations are going through and can be helped by people that want to adopt. As of now international adoption isn't strictly enforced, but should because it can alleviate many problems.

    1. I really like your topic Jazmin. I like how you are approaching an issue such as childcare from many different countries. That was something I personally had never given much thought about before. As you further your argument, however, I think it is important to keep in mind that adoption policies in the U.S. are not the best themselves. Many children here don't get adopted due to prejudices on the parents or on the children themselves. Often times, children do not end up in good homes and end up in worse conditions than when they were in foster care. While International adoption is a nice solution to an international problem, one question that someone might propose is" Why should we focus on international adoption when our own adoption system needs work?". Nevertheless, it is a good topic.

    2. Hey Jazmin, you topic really captured my attention especially because it's about international adoptions, and it's not a topic that many people discuss. Although my question to you is more towards your own personal thoughts and what was specifically from the documentary lead you to writing about this topic. Did watching the documentary motivate you to adopt a child from a different country in the future? Something that you can also talk about is the adoption rate between inside and out of the country or what kind/type of people adopt children from foreign countries. I personally believe that you have chose an interesting topic and I look forward to learning more about your topic as well.

    3. I really love your topic Jazmin because adoption is something that is controversial, let alone the topic of one leaving their kids for whatever reason. I feel like you focusing on third world countries is really good because it gives you a narrow a detailed place to look at instead of being scatted. You can also talk about the pros and cons about an adoption from a third world country and how their lives were and how they might change. But I also agree with Jeramiah the process of adoption might be different in other places and sometimes kids don't en up in the best homes. Just look into that :)

If you grew up watching Disney Princess movies, you would have thought that mermaids do exist when you would go to Disney Land and take a Picture with Princess Ariel. However, most people don’t realize that we as humans might have also evolved into mermaids! (Shocking isn’t it?) I personally believe in mermaids, and became inspired, after watching a documentary called “Mermaids The Body Found”. The documentary provides several new casts, scientific finding, videos, and real life footage of what appears to be mermaids. Most of which explains, and uses the Aquatic Ape Theory.

Research- Article, Aquatic Ape Theory and Mermaids: Proof Mermaids Really Exist? We learn in our science classes about Charles Darwin Theory of Evolution, based on his discoveries on the Galapagos Islands, and how some organisms die off, “survival of the fittest”. There is also Theory of Creationism(not taught in school due to separation of church, and state), and how “God” created every living thing on earth. However, we are never taught about the Aquatic Ape Theory(AAT), which is believed that 67 million years ago, East Africa was flooded and Homo Sapiens were found living in water, and over the course of time they have evolved to be able to adapt to their new environment. This article is related to my topic because It provides a theory as to why scientist believe that Homo Sapiens have evolved into mermaids just as they have been able to evolve into humans. It also provides characteristics such as “relative hairlessness, body fat, large brain, and respiratory system, all in which have evolved over the course of time for organisms to adapt to their surrounding. Through out the article there are also two videos provided: the first explains the Aquatic Ape Theory, and the second is the Evolution of Mermaids and what scientist believe that Homo Sapiens look like after a transformation.

    1. I like your topic and I am interested in reading about it. For future note, when you are referencing an article, you should place its name in quotes to show that it is the title of the article. You should remember that you are writing an Argument Essay and in order to convince us of what you are saying you need credible sources. For example, you could find the names of the scientists who conduced these theories. It seems interesting so far and you seem to be off to a good start.

    2. Bryan, I'll make sure to use credible sources. As for the scientist that conducted the theory If I'm correct it was stated in the video that was with the article. But, your right, if I want my essay to be convincing I should use my sources, and that includes the scientist that came up with the theory. Which by the way the theory began in 1930 by Alister Hardy, if you watch the first video that come up in the article it explains the theory and the scientist in more detail. Thank for the feedback.

    3. I agree with Bryan this topic is interesting because we joke around about mermaids but don't realize that researching about them is someones job. I also like that you are agreeing that mermaids do exist. I would just like to know how will your research help you. Also what type is it (ethos, logos, pathos). With the research make sure the videos are real.

    4. Interesting topic just don't forget to fact check, your timing of 67 million year is offas homo sapiens(modern humans) have only been around 200,000 years. Maybe you meant to say the species that homo sapiens evolved from.

Herring, Cedric. "Skin Deep." Google Books. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015.

    Topic: Colorism
    Research: Appeal to Logos Comparison
“Colorism” is the discriminatory treatment of individuals falling within the same “racial” group on the basis of skin color. It operates both intraracially and interracially. Intraracial colorism occurs when members of a racial group make distinctions based upon skin color between members of their own race. Interracial colorism occurs when members of one racial group make distinctions based upon skin color between members of another racial group. Much of the recent research on colorism has focused on patterns in the African American community. It is plausible, however, that similar issues exist within Latino, Asian American, and even the White communities.
We must understand that colorism-much like the notion of race itself-is historically contingent on supremacist assumptions… “For example, Keith and Herring(1991) explored the effects of skin color on stratification outcomes such as education, occupation and income. The study included controls for factors such as parental socioeconomic status, sex, age, urbanization, marital status and region of residence. The results suggested that skin tone had significant effects on education, occupation and income; in fact, skin tone was a better predictor of stratification outcomes than such factors parental socioeconomic status.

    Explanation:
The article relates to colorism because it provides basic information about the types of colorism there are and its presence in all racial communities. I plan to use the research to define what colorism is towards the beginning of my essay and clarify any misunderstandings readers may have.

    1. As soon as I read that you topic was on colorism, I was expecting a cliche or a typical argument about what it meant for people to be judged based on race. Once I read your research and your explanation towards it, I was interested and I loved the way you brought the topic from a unique perspective. I also think that the way you chose to reveal this topic from more than one racial perspective will help make the Argument Essay much stronger and give you more credibility as an unbiased writer. Overall, it is a good topic and I suggest you state who "Keith and Herring" are, along with their occupation to make it sound more credible.

    2. The light-skin v. dark-skin debate is often misconstrued as a race's self-hatred rather than another version of systematic depression, stemming from the Willie Lynch letters. I want to know how you will explain its presence in the past and how its connected to the present. And while I was solely commenting on the black race previously, I would still like to see how the presence of colorism effects all races. Ultimately, I think the topic is not debated enough and can't wait to gain your perspective on the issue.

  13. Drunk drivers should be arrested at their first offense:

My topic is very specific, I didn’t want to just focus on drunk drivers because that was too broad. So I decided to focus on them getting arrested because there are many legal works that go into that. My initial thought was that it could be a very debatable topic. I totally agree with this topic. Many people have died or have gotten severely injured because of drunk drivers. I know just the basics about this topic like getting a DUI, getting your license suspended and so on. As I continue to research there are books that say some of the punishments is making the driver go to rehabilitation for their first offense but what do they get out of going to rehab. After reading this I still agree with my topic.

“Assuming it’s your first offense, the court may impose a fine ranging from $390 to $1,000, as well as suspend your driver’s license for up to four months. Depending on the circumstances, you may also have to spend anywhere from four days to six months behind bars, attend DUI school, perform community service, and/or have a vehicle ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle (a mechanism that requires you to perform a breathalyzer each time you attempt to start your automobile).”

    http://www.californiaduipenalties.net/

    "CaliforniaDUIPenalties.NetSpeak With a Local Attorney Right Away."California DUI Penalties. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.

This helps my topic because according to the California law there are first offense warnings to drunk drivers but as you can see it depends on the circumstance how bad your punishment will be. This quote can help me point out that yes a lot of actions are being done, but they’re not big enough because once they finish their punishment they’ll go back to committing their crime. This is an appeal to logos because this information is logical coming from the law.

    1. First off I would also have to agree with you Geraldine that drunk driving is extremely dangerous. However, my concern after reading your statement below is the following, "should the penalty for drunk driving be the same for all drunk drivers or does it depend on the situation?". By same punishment I'm referring to what's your idea of a punishment for drunk driving. Is it the same or different from the laws original sentence? Another thing to keep in mind is if the punishment is valued the same if a drunk driver kills another person/ people v. them getting injured. Does the punishment remain the same? It's like you stated above, this is a "debatable topic", but I'm confident enough that you'll write a really good paper.

    2. I like how you narrowed down your topic and are now focusing on drunk drivers being arrested. I think the reader is going to have an easy time relating to your argumentave essay because accidents caused by intoxicated drivers are so common. You are using evidence from a reliable source which I think will add to your credibility.

    3. I think your topic is very good. I think the problem is establishing the penalties because, as I imagine, most circumstances will be different. I think you should establish what penalties should go with each circumstance. Something that will strengthen your argument is a good counter argument. If you find enough evidence from the law then your paper will be really good because nobody is above the law.

  14. My topic: Captivity
I became interested in this topic after reading several articles and watching a few documentaries about animals that are abducted from their natural habitat and taken to facilities, where they are sometimes exploited to make the company profit. I consider this to be inhumane because no living creature should be stripped from their freedom and be forced to do things they don't want to. There is a big difference between conservation and exploitation.

Research: (appeal to logos) "The very word "circus" brings to mind vivid images of amazing acrobats, comedic clowns ... and exotic animals. But unlike the human entertainers, animals do not choose the circus life; they are kept in captivity and forced to take part in the show. Circuses that use animals are aggressively promoted by the circus industry as safe, fun, wholesome family entertainment. This couldn't be farther from the truth. After the circus industry's glitter and glamour has settled, the animals remain involuntary participants in a degrading spectacle, performing not because they want to, but because they are forced to"

The article goes in depth about how circus animal are trained, transported, and cared for. It also talks about how the animals suffer from psychology trauma that can increase the risk of danger for both the animal, the trainers, and spectators. The article ends off by talking about the negative effects of captive breeding. Although it sounds like a good thing, it is not, because unless the newborn animals are released into the wild( the majority are not) more animals are being added to the exotic animal industry.

    1. I think this is a great topic because I don't think it receives as much attention. I think that acknowledging that it's a bad idea to set every animal in captivity free will strengthen your argument because the animals won't be accustomed to living in the wild. In your argument I think that you need to explain which way you think is the best way to release animals from captivity.

    2. I agree with your position on the topic and think it is a very controversial. I think the evidence you are using to explain your argument can fit in nicely to your essay. I think that you can also do research on organizations that focus on captivity. For instance, the ASPCA and that can help you get ideas on how to incorperate pathos if you wanted to.

  15. My topic is “global warming”. My initial thoughts on this topic were that it was something I am not too informed about, but it sounds interesting and hope to learn more about through research. With the information I know so far I believe that global warming is a leading cause of the problems we are having with our environment.Although the idea of global warming has always been a controversial topic. The change in the climate is something that is not often seen as a problem. In addition, I think that global warming can also potentially affect us in the future.

    Research: (appealing to logos)

“Our ability to adapt is one of our greatest strengths as a species. But in this case, the medicine could feed the disease. As we adapt to climatic changes already happening, some of those behaviors will affect the amount of greenhouse gases we put into the atmosphere, and thus affect the climate itself. Population growth, increases or decreases in air pollution, increased ability to purchase air conditioning or automobiles, and other social and economic changes are difficult to pin down decades into the future. This is why IPCC climate scientists have created a number of emissions scenarios; each one sketches a different set of possible future social, economic, and technological developments for use in projecting future changes in the climate.”

The research I found explains how the climate change is because of human causes and natural causes. It explains how a growing population changes the air pollution, and the during the night the heat has gradually increased over the past 50 years. The research also focuses on how the number of droughts have increased and has almost doubled. The research also clears up some common misconceptions that people may have with global warming. For instance, the idea that planting more trees will help the climate change. Although it explains that planting more trees can sometimes “intensify global warming” due to the “greenhouse gas produced by human activity,” but planting trees at certain latitudes can be beneficial. This research can help me in my essay because it goes into depth with the basic ideas related to global warming and states possible counter arguments by stating what people think vs. what is supported by facts.

  16. My Topic: I chose to write about undocumented immigrants because I have a lot of experience with them. Also, since Ms. Preciado’s class I feel like I’m more knowledgeable of this topic. By writing an argument research paper, I will be able to expand my knowledge on this topic. With the recent news of giving undocumented immigrants license, I believe I can strengthen my argument. Also, since I strongly believe in my side, I wonder if any of the research I find will make me switch my mind. While researching, I discovered articles in favor of my point of view.

Research (Appeals to Logos and Ethics).“Undocumented immigrants are "employees" within the definition of the National Labor Relations Act (1) (NLRA). (2) In Hoffman Plastic Compounds, Inc. v. NLRB, (3) the Supreme Court limited the ability of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB or Board) to order backpay for an undocumented immigrant who was unlawfully fired and who used false documents when hired, holding that such a remedy would conflict with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (4) (IRCA). over the past eleven years, state courts and lower federal courts have grappled with the limits of Hoffman. “

This research relates to my topic because I could use it to defend undocumented immigrants. Many of them come to the United States in order to get a job. However, since there aren't laws protecting undocumented immigrants, many employers take advantage of them and exploit them. I would like to argue that they deserve more rights because they take a lot of the jobs that other type of people wouldn't. This quote will help my argument because it states that "undocumented immigrants are employees." Many undocumented immigrants are fired unfairly. This will help protect undocumented immigrant's rights.

  17. My Topic: I am researching discrimination in media and I think that the media’s constant covering of what is now acknowledged as “stereotypical deeds” of each race has led to a brainwashing of most people’s mindset on how they see one another. When I say stereotypical deeds I am referring to how society associates gang violence and drugs to African- Americans, terrorists to Muslims, and illegal immigrants to Hispanics. Most forms of media do not reveal this directly, but rarely is there ever a scenario where the media (newspaper, magazine, TV News, ect.) interviews a Black man because of his social or financial success ( not including famous athletes or musicians).

Research: I have found that the media tends to place news about stereotypical events describing people of different color because it is a “cheap technique” used to sell their papers and have a high ratings. It is a form of yellow journalism that is used by the media, except they are not making up these statistics or exaggerating on the events that occur (that is my counter argument). The media chooses to show these forms of “news” for the sake of being able to draw more attention, and revenue, to themselves. According to an article I read called “RACISM AND THE AMERICAN MEDIA” by Patrick Henningsen, it is shown that the media tends to alter the truth and only play parts of a message or parts of a picture to send a false message to its audience for the improvement of its ratings. An example of this would be if a recording was played and all it said was the suspect saying “I hate her…” as opposed to the full sentence which may have been “I hate her evil stepmother.” The media has depicted only the partial truth through their desire to beat their competition, yet they do not seem to have an insight to the racial tension that they can cause from their attempt to make a quick buck.

I decide to pick this topic because most of the time the tales and creatures in folklore and myth are believed to be just some persons over active imagination and the gullibility of the people around them. However some of these thing should have started out somewhere. so I started digging around first at well know mythical creatures.

    The research: logos.

    1. Bryan I think you have an interesting topic. Though it maybe biased due to the fact that I fancy myths, legends, and other ancient lore. Regardless, this topic has a broad spectrum of arguments for and against myths being based on facts. The connection between the fossils of dinosaurs and the existence of other possible reptiles of enormous size like dragons is a well theorized hypothesis, but it seems like you stopped short in research. The reason is obvious. I suggest looking into myths that are more contemporary and have plenty of supporting facts. In fact, speaking of dinosaur relations, the Scottish myth of the Loch Ness is based off the belief of a surviving Plesiosaur from the Triassic period.

  21. Topic: Graffiti, Art vs. Vandalism.
This topic catches my immediate interest because I am an amateur artist. I have seen plenty of graffiti since growing up in the 90's, and the controversy that surrounds the question, "Is Graffiti art or Vandalism" has spread throughout a city like Los Angeles and even abroad to Europe. I would personally argue that graffiti is a form of 'street art' but for the sake of this argument paper I will be objective and reveal the opposing sides' reasoning. Graffiti itself (if someone might not know) is defined as, "Words or drawings, especially humorous, rude, or political, on walls, doors, etc. in public places," (dictionary.cambridge.org).

#1. "This article is about the intersections between contemporary forms of urban inscription, art and the city, as they come to be configured through an emergent `post-graffiti' aesthetic practice. Exemplary of this movement is the self-proclaimed `art terrorist', Banksy, who has earned a reputation recently for his audacious interventions into some of the most significant art institutions in the western world, as well as for his politically charged stencil and sculptural work in the everyday spaces of the city. Focusing on the artist's Peckham Rock, a fragment of concrete that he surreptitiously stuck to the walls of the British Museum in May 2005, this article uses the methodological device of `the journey' in an attempt to place the connections and disconnections between a series of elite and institutional spaces, social relations and mediascapes through which `the rock' passes as its `life' as an artwork unfolds. Existing research, including that by geographers, has examined graffiti in terms of urban identity politics, territoriality and transgression. While such work has generated important insights into the nature of particular kinds of urbanism, it is often limited to a focus on graffiti `writing', a subcultural model of urban inscription originating in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s. In contrast, this article explores a more recent style of inscribing the city, as set out in a series of art publications and conferences, and unpacks what such a model might indicate regarding contemporary urban processes and experiences."

  22. #2. "Although its artistic merits can't be denied, graffiti is still in fact a form of vandalism. Artists tag both public and private property, which becomes costly for tax payers and business and property owners. The cost for cleanup in the U.S. has not been documented definitively, but it is safe to assume that it is in the billions of dollars. Large cities typically budget more money toward graffiti removal. In 2006 Chicago budgeted $6.5 million while Omaha, Neb. spends about $100,000 annually, according to graffitihurts.org.
In addition to cleanup costs, graffiti vandals often shoplift their materials, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Stealing spray paint and markers adds an additional cost to businesses.
Vandalism also affects revenue from transportation, as evidenced by the reduction in riders during the 1960s and 1970s. Even before graffiti became associated with gangs, people became afraid of riding the vandalized subways."

  23. Topic: Privilege in America

Many people/groups in our society do not realize they have some sort of privilege. For example, if a child is born a male- he automatically has male privilege. If a child is born white, he/she has white privilege. Privilege is a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. Privilege is connect to groups that are considered in the 'hierarchy'. Groups like women, people of color, etc. cannot be granted the same privileges because they are not considered in the hierarchy group.
Many of the groups that have privilege do not realize that they HAVE privilege. They refuse to acknowledge it. Their privilege allows them to turn a blind eye, while others watch. By others, I mean minorities.
Groups like men and white people are hold to different standards, than minorities. This because the groups that have privilege and that society protects- can and are oppressive. Minorities cannot be oppressive to those who have privilege because the system we all live in tells otherwise.
An example of privilege would be a white person and a person of color (poc) apply for the same job, statistically, the white person would get the job because of his/her skin color.

As Martin states, the voice of black women is diminished when gay men exhibit extreme "Sha'NaeNae" traits. The gay men are perpetuating a damaging stereotype. However, I do think the article discussed in the interview and the interview itself have major flaws.

    1. Heads-up Dasajah, you need to state the type of research you have here (Ex. Logos-social, Pathos-political etc.)

    2. I really do like your topic Dasajah, its seems like it would be a very interesting essay . I do agree with you that people are not aware of the things they wear or say therefore they are being disrespectful. I think your topic is actually very interesting because more people need be informed about how their actions may affect certain groups. I think you can use the example of the feather accessories that were trending at one point, because the feathers had a real meaning to the Aztecs, I believe it meant power and hierarchy but many girls use those feathers to make them selves look "cute". But to those who were informed about the significance of the feathers, those people were offended. Really good topic though Dasajah.

  25. My Topic is Prostitution. I chose to write about prostitution because many are not aware about what types of prostitution there are in the world. Even though prostitution is committed by all gender, many associate prostitution with women. Its interesting that prostitution in some countries are legal but when most people hear about proposition their automatic response is , prostitution is shameful and it should not be banned. However , there are many people who are not educate about the kinds of prostitution there are like escort services, street prostitution , and trafficking. Most people may not understand why other resort to prostitution or why some believe prostitution should become legal, that's why I would like to research this topic to inform those that may have questions about prostitution .

    Research: (Appeal to logos)
"Teenage runaways are particularly vulnerable to pimps. Often, kids who run away from home are fleeing abusive circumstances. With no money, they arrive in cities and seek street contacts for money and shelter. Pimps exploit this circumstance, pretending to befriend girls who are desperate for food and shelter as well as for affection. The pimp might offer them a place to stay and give them pretty clothes as well as drugs. He might even act as a boyfriend. But soon he coerces them to repay him, and they are forced into prostitution."

This research relates to my topic because it can help me support my claim about why people resort to prostitution. Proposition usually begins with teenagers because they are so naive and don't know much. Pimps then take advantage of young girls in order to use and abuse them. Young prostitutes soon become drug addicts because they are being controlled by their pimps and they have no choice but to obey. Many may say if a girl wants to change her life around and not be a prostitute she can just leave. But, many do not understand that it is not that easy, prostitutes most of the time are brain washed by their pimps so they know they can not leave, and if they do leave there may be a consequence.

  26. So I made this same post about two hours ago but for some reason it did not appear so I have to retype it so here it goes.

Topic:Taxing Churches. As an intellectual that has become more and more interested in politics and our government, I feel that churches not being taxed is a growing issue in our society and is even more prominent in our own city. If taxes are allowed to use our roads, emergency services, etc. that they should be taxed. Religious institutions are some of the richest in the world, their pastors, preachers, and priest are driving new cars, they give their seromin mega churches, one must ask themselves if this is truly necessary of a non-profit. If churches were taxed a large majority of our nations monetary issues would be solved.

research: "We are not talking chump change here. Consider that for every tax dollar a religious organization does not pay, you and I pay it on its behalf. Many are among the wealthiest organizations in the world: by 1971, the amount of real and personal property owned by U.S. churches was approx. $110 billion. In New York City alone, the amount was $3 billion in 1989. A 1986 estimate showed religious income in that year of approx. $100 billion, or about five times the income of the five largest corporations in the U.S. All tax free."

The research supports my position by providing hard facts about the amount of money that religious institutions rake in. Not only does it provide statistics but it also provides logical arguments for example how not taxing churches in unconstitutional or how our nation is not a theocracy. This website will also lead me to different links that will continue to help me strengthen my argument.

  28. My Topic: The modern technology today consists of reality television, the internet, smartphones and even electronic books! This technology is supposed to be a way to bring social life together to reflect upon our values and let us know how much we relate to those on the show who wish to make their dreams, to win, or to compromise with another. But what if technology starts to overtake our ideas and minds in order for us to change for ourselves morally or drastically?

Research: "I think the rise of social media is definitely correlated with the rise of narcissism in our society. Our self-esteem depends on how many likes we get, how many followers we get, if someone texts us back." Stolz responded.

"There’s been an emerging body of research that shows that when you stop having offscreen interaction, you lose empathy. You lose the ability to have genuine reactions to real problems and real things."

"Social media has definitely accentuated and accelerated breakups. But I also think that we as humans are an impulsive group of people, and I think social media provides not only an indelibility for relationships in the past—where you just can’t seem to get away from them so you just keep thinking about them—but it also provides a really easy avenue to be impulsive to reconnect and make mistakes."

My research relates to my topic because nowadays, people now rely on the social media than what they had before like actual interaction with others than to stare at phones and text than to speak. Our modern world differentiates the one in the past when we barely had anything before the world continues to develop in order to improve people's lives. But also how privacy doesn't matter anymore with viral videos or photos and laziness to record and watch TV than to have companionship.

Is this you' opinion or a definition? Cyber bullying also has an impact on us morally.

I am really interested in your topic and i think that you can possibly add something about the technology being dangerous as well for example cyberbuyying.

  30. Topic: My topic regards Gay Marriage. Over the years, gay marriage has started to be a bigger deal throughout world am I feel that as time continues, gay marriage will have a stronger impact on the world. Personally I am ok with gay marriage because i find no reason to separate a couple if they are in love. I am Catholic and according to the Catholic religion and Christians I believe, although theses are both the same thing, we should be against Gay Marriage because the God stated in the bible that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The only problem I would have with a male gay marriage or a male gay person would be if they begin to seek interest in me.

    Research:
    1. http://www.hrc.org/campaigns/marriage-center?gclid=CIPMhu2Lt8MCFcOGaQodYooAGw

In this link above, is a diagram that shows the United States and the states that allow and do not allow same sex marriage. As we see in the diagram, most of the United states allows gay marriage and a small amount don't which shows the evolution of how gay marriage is begging to be accepted not only here but all over the world.

    2. http://gaymarriage.procon.org/#Background

"Proponents argue that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination.

Opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery slope that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages."

This quote shows both sides of an arguement but i'll focus more on the side to which I agree. I agree with the first paragraph because we ultimately live in the United States and according to the supreme law of the land, we cannot discriminate anyone what so ever and gay people are under any circumstance an exception.

  31. Topic: My topic is in regard to the new archetypes of women found in media. I believe the times have grown to be more accommodating to women, rather than simply objectifying them. New age archetypes have not disbanded the older typecasts but they assist in emphasizing women than their appeal to men.

Research: "Hummingbird characters can be found on network and cable, in very different genres. They’re different ages; some are more manic, some sweeter or more sour. (Leslie Knope, for one, went from the butt of her show’s comedy to its glorified heroine.) But they do share traits: they’re idealistic feminine dreamers whose personalities are irritants. They are not merely spunky, but downright obsessive. And most crucially, these are not minor characters. On each show, the Hummingbird is a protagonist—an alienating-yet-sympathetic figure whose struggles are taken seriously and considered meaningful. This is not the female analogue of the cable anti-hero, as seen on shows like “Damages” or the promising new FX drama “The Americans”; it’s not a layered, sympathetic bad girl, like the great Juliette Barnes on “Nashville.” This is something else, an archetype that is grounded in ideas about compassion, but doesn’t strive for likability."
Nussbaum, Emily. "The Hummingbird Theory." The New Yorker. 3 March 2013. 28 Jan 2015. http://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/the-hummingbird-theory

This is one of the recently found archetypes that describes new age women. The quote explains the qualities of a Hummingbird woman in media as being realistic and not striving for likes. I plan on going into depth on how this archetype has some basis in real women and has no objectivity.

  32. Topic: College Education. I plan on discussing the factors about why going to college is beneficial even though it might not seem worth it. To add on, I want to convince my audience that there concerns can be approached and resolved, that there concerns should not interfere with going to college.

Research: "In this brief, we take a rather narrow view of the value of a college degree, focusing on the earnings premium. However, there are many non-monetary benefits of schooling which are harder to measure but no less important. Research suggests that additional education improves overall wellbeing by affecting things like job satisfaction, health, marriage, parenting, trust, and social interaction. Additionally, there are social benefits to education, such as reduced crime rates and higher political participation. We also do not want to dismiss personal preferences, and we acknowledge that many people derive value from their careers in ways that have nothing to do with money. While beyond the scope of this piece, we do want to point out that these noneconomic factors can change the cost-benefit calculus."

I chose this piece of information to help prove my point that even though it may seem as though college is expensive, there is beneficial outcomes that come from it as well. I want to let my audience know that everything done to go to college and to graduate college is to have a better life afterwards.

  35. Topic: After doing a bit more research I found that churches have only been officially tax exempt since 1894, but have been unofficially exempt since the founding of our country. I have also learned that donations to churches are tax deductible. I learned that not only does the gov. allow churches not to pay taxes but they also in a sense provide money to them.

Research(Appeal to Logos):"US churches* received an official federal income tax exemption in 1894, and they have been unofficially tax-exempt since the country's founding. All 50 US states and the District of Columbia exempt churches from paying property tax. Donations to churches are tax-deductible. The debate continues over whether or not these tax benefits should be retained."

The website I found offers opposing viewpoints on the issue. What I found to be surprising is that donations to the church are actually tax deductible. In my opinion this is an absolute violations of the separation between church and state. The reason being is that at the end of the day the fed gov. can be the one paying everyone back for their donations made to their church. This only strengthens my opinion that churches should be taxed, because not only do they own over $300 billion in untaxed property, but donations are also tax deductible.

  36. My Topic: Suicide in Youth
Suicide is something that is held from the news since the morality from it makes it unacceptable. I know that suicide is a current issue in young adults right now, especially in African Americans and members of the LGBT community. I feel that suicide is an invisible problem. Since from what I have seen, many people know suicide is a problem yet choose not to act on it. Others pretend the factors that lead to suicide can be an over exaggeration. With research I want my paper to argue a new way to reinvent suicide prevention. As I research more into my topic I hope to find cycles, if any, and suicide in relation to the rise of social media.

My Research: Appeal to Logos Comparison
I started off my research with an statistics article which stated that suicide rate have shown to go up when the economy is down. Also in the years between 1980 to 1992 the suicide rates fell in every age, gender, and race group except in African American men. A group of people which many people fail to reach out with suicide prevention is children between the ages of 10 to 14 years old. Comparing the suicide rates from then to now, suicide rate have more than doubled since 2010 when these statistics were taken. In the second article, I decided to look into suicide prevention to see what was been put into stopping the high rates of suicide. The pills given to both children and adults don’t really work. It’s much more complex to notice the results antidepressants have on young adults. Since most young adults are minors, many don’t participate in clinical trials. In adults it is said only 60% are responsive to the pills. This gives me insight for my paper. A way to argue that the methods of suicide prevention through antidepressants are not working and we need to find a new method.

  37. Topic: Racism

Research: "It was shocking that a local grand jury did not indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for killing Michael Brown. But no one predicted Wilson would go on TV and say he did as he was trained, and tell the nation he would do it again."

I feel that in my essay I should take this into consideration as well. Its not that all white police men are racist and don't like African Americans but simply they have been train to kill. That why in training the are practicing shooting and aiming. This will allow me to see both sides of arguments made about racism in the criminal justice system.

  38. Censorship of Pornography
According to conservatives, the sexually explicit content of pornography is an affront to decent family and religious values and deeply offensive to a significant portion of citizens who hold these values. The consumption of pornography is bad for society. It undermines and destabilizes the moral fabric of a decent and stable society, by encouraging sexual promiscuity, deviant sexual practices and other attitudes and behaviour that threaten traditional family and religious institutions, and which conservatives regard as intrinsically morally wrong. Furthermore, pornography is bad for those who consume it, corrupting their character and preventing them from leading a good and worthwhile life in accordance with family and religious values.

  40. I planned to use this as an argument against my side that would be lowered once I describe how our society is based off of laws not morals, or religion. If a specific religion wanted to censor pornography from their people then they have the ability to do that but they should not be able to take a very famous form of entertainment away from the people who use it only for mastabatory delight.
