  1. Topic- Over the past couple of weeks I have been researching on the existence of mermaids. However, with the majority of my post being for my argument here’s a counter argument.

Research- “Christopher Columbus even reported sighting three mermaids near the Dominican Republic in 1493, though he was disappointed that they were not as pretty as popular depictions suggested. In truth, what Columbus and other sailors most likely saw were sea mammals known as manatees and dugongs. In fact, the name “dugong” is taken from a Malaysian term meaning “lady of the sea.” Unlike most sea animals, these creatures have soft, rounded bodies; younger calves also have pale skin and are about the same length as a person. That these creatures were generally viewed as female is likely due to their pale skin, soft curves, and the fact that most sailors were men who did not have contact with women for weeks or months at a time.”

Given the evidence presented above, this proves that mermaids DO NOt exist. for it’s the imagination of sailors that have been out on a ship at sea for too long, and because there are no females on the ship. No female interaction means that the brain goes a little nutty. Therefore sailors begin to confuse manatees with women causing them to believe that what they have seen is a mermaid.

    1. Melani I feel that this kind of just completely goes against everything you have said. I was wondering how you would go against this evidence. If you are able to prove this wrong then your essay will be very strong I believe.

    2. Hi there Melani, I think that the counter you have will be kind of difficult to refute. However, if you are able to refute it then I am sure that you will be more credible.

I feel that you should address the idea that many not believe the idea that mermaids exist, knowing this you can attempt to mention the idea that the ocean has not yet been fully discovered and that new animals are still being discovered.

If you can do this, then I feel that you will have a strong essay.

    3. I agree with the guys Mell, you are going to have to find a strong piece of tangible and/or at least credible evidence that you can use to challenge the information you have here. If you are successful, this might seem perfect for you to use as your final or main counter argument to break and I am sure it will as result in a great paper.

  2. Topic: My topic is on music and why it should be a part of everyone's daily life.

    Research: (Logos reasoning from authority...)
For today’s post I am focusing on hip hop, and its benefits. The article talks about a teacher who was able to use hip hop as a learning tool. In doing this this teacher received some of the highest scores. “For him, the lyrics—scrubbed of all profanity, misogyny, homophobia, or other offense—offer a valid source of imagery, alliteration, personification, or other literary devices. Often he'll pair a hip-hop artist with a classic poet to teach a specific standard.” I thought this was very interesting, because some people have negative opinions about hip hop, and this helps to show them theey were not correct. I plan to use this as an example to support my argument.

  3. Topic: Terrorism

Over the past few weeks, I've been looking at data on how certain countries have responded to terrorist attacks. I also noticed, that Muslims that do not support their extremists are often looked down by many people, not only here in the US but in other parts of the world.

I did some more research on terrorist groups and there motivations.

    Research: (Appeal to Logos)
    "Al-Qaeda." PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 10 Feb. 2015.

Bin Laden and al Qaeda violently opposed the United States for several reasons. First, the United States was regarded as an "infidel" because it was not governed in a manner consistent with the group's extremist interpretation of Islam. Second, the United States was viewed as providing essential support for other "infidel" governments and institutions, particularly the governments of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the nation of Israel, and the United Nations organization, which were regarded as enemies of the group. Third, al Qaeda opposed the involvement of the United States armed forces in the Gulf War in 1991 and in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia in 1992 and 1993. In particular, al Qaeda opposed the continued presence of American military forces in Saudi Arabia (and elsewhere on the Saudi Arabian peninsula) following the Gulf War. Fourth, al Qaeda opposed the United States Government because of the arrest, conviction and imprisonment of persons belonging to al Qaeda or its affiliated terrorist groups or those with whom it worked. For these and other reasons, Bin Laden declared a jihad, or holy war, against the United States, which he has carried out through al Qaeda and its affiliated organizations.

I feel that I can use this to state the reasons on why a terrorist group like Al-Qaeda justify their actions. Also, this can be used to explain how the US involvement in other countries tends to be the reasons why terrorist groups tend to have an animus towards them.

  4. Topic:
My topic focuses on the controversy that surrounds the question, "Is Graffiti art or Vandalism" has spread throughout a city like Los Angeles and even abroad to Europe. I would personally argue that graffiti is a form of 'street art' but for the sake of this argument paper I will be objective and reveal the opposing sides' reasoning. "Graffiti," is known as street drawings, paintings, and writings on public surfaces. The issue is the debate on whether graffiti is to be respectfully recognized as a freelance style of 'public art' or just a simple crime violation of property damage and vandalism on buildings. I am researching into both sides of this controversial act. I am looking for information that I can find helpful in writing an essay that will help me come to an objective conclusion to which side is right in my opinion.

    Research: (Appeal to Ethos, Social)
"With requests for graffiti cleanup coming in the city government at twice last year's rate, are the glory days of vandalism returning? Michael Martin asked former Transit Police vandal-squad member Joseph Rivera, who should know: He just published a book on the attempts to clean up the city in the eighties and nineties called Vandal Squad... Today, graffiti-covered trains seem sort of romantic. I'm guessing you don't see them that way. Covering trains with senseless scrawls never did appeal to me. Were there any graffiti writers you admired? Many were very creative and extremely hard to catch. Unique and different? I would have to say Revs; the creative Seen; the talented Ces, Ewok, Cope, and Stem. Did you get respect? The average New Yorker couldn't believe the unit existed. They'd refer to us as "crayon cops." But the squad did do hard-core detective work: stakeouts, going undercover to graffiti shows ... They did require extensive, in-depth investigations to identify the markings, then identify those who are responsible for the incidents. Being able to read graffiti markings is a hard thing to do. The penalties seem pretty ineffective-many who were bombing back then are still doing it today. Absolutely. I still see vandals from the early eighties leaving their mark. Why did you retire after the city merged the Transit Police into the NYPD? There is no doubt that member of Transit got the royal shaft afterward. Coming to terms with the fact that we weren't getting the [detective] shield was the easy part. The hard part was knowing that the city didn't take care of us after we performed at such a high level..."

  8. Topic: The exploitation of workers. So far I have found a lot of information agreeing to the fact that companies exploit their workers in order to keep and make more profit.

    Research:
    BP
The oil giant causes immense environmental destruction around the world including areas of the gulf of Mexico.

    China
The superpower continues it’s human rights abuses, with torture being permitted and slave labour conditions encouraged. China also unlawfully occupies Tibet.

    Coca-Cola
The global corporation oppresses trade union activity in Colombia and depletes groundwater resources in India.

    Disney
The corporation exploits children and adults to work in factories with horrendous working conditions and gives workers a very poor wage.

    Halliburton
Once headed by Former Vice President Dick Cheney, Halliburton has made $20 billion from Iraqi oil, more profit than any other company.

    Nestlé
The company irresponsibly markets baby milk formula which infringes the International Code of Marketing of breast milk substitutes. Poor African women are encouraged to buy Nestlés milk rather than use their own breast milk.

    Nike
The company previously had production facilities in South Korea and Taiwan but workers demanded higher than poverty-level wages. As a result, Nike moved it's facilities to countries like Thailand and Vietnam where they are able to pay workers appalling wages.

    Primark
The clothing chain has been found to exploit workers in third world countries by making them work in appalling conditions with very small pay.

    Shell
The oil company destroys the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta in Nigeria by creating pollution and environmental hazards without compensating the residents.

    Starbucks
For every cup of coffee the company sells, farmers in coffee-growing countries like Ethiopia earn on average 2p.

    Wal-Mart
While the company claims it is against slave labour, some of it's Chinese clothing factories force workers to work in poor conditions with long hours and little pay.

    Analysis:
This information will help me in my essay when I'm trying to give examples of companies that exploit workers in foreign countries. Companies don't only exploit their workers, they also abuse the land by creating pollution. Today I learned that Starbucks pays workers little money, and that Shell creates pollution.

  9. Topic: College Education. I have been looking into other information that support the idea that graduating from college is beneficial. I found information that has shown that more jobs are requiring college education, meaning that a high school diploma won't be enough.

Research: (Appeal to Logos) More and more jobs require college degrees. During the recession between Dec. 2007 and Jan. 2010, jobs requiring college degrees grew by 187,000, while jobs requiring some college or an associate's degree fell by 1.75 million and jobs requiring a high school degree or less fell by 5.6 million. [13] Based on economy and job projections calculated by Georgetown University, in 2018, approximately 63% of jobs will require some college education or a degree. [14]

This information can lead more into giving individuals more opportunities for better employment I believe that this side of the topic is less brought up when discussing the college benefits, and i think it will be be a good idea to bring it up. This also suggests that college is beneficial mainly in the long run.

  10. My. Topic: Suicide in Youth
As I continue to research I believe my only trouble is how to form a concise thesis in order to put in all information I have gathered. I still firmly believe that the should be a rise in social awareness and that the suicide prevention should be reinvented to be more successful.
    My Research: Appeal to Logos
"Nearly 8.3 million U.S. adults ages 18 and older thought seriously about committing suicide in the past year, according to the first national scientific survey of its size about this problem.

The study, by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), also shows that 2.3 million adult Americans made a suicide plan in the past year and that 1.1 million adults--4).5 percent of all adult Americans--actually attempted suicide.

Young adults ages 18 to 25 were far more likely to have seriously considered suicide in the past year than those ages 26 to 49 (6.7 percent versus 3.9 per cent) and nearly three times more likely than those 50 or older (2.3 percent). These disparities in risk levels among younger and older adults also were found in suicide planning and suicide attempts."
This shows that the age group in women with the highest percentage in suicide is women between the ages of 18 to 25. This includes both suicide thoughts and suicide attempts. Also women with substance abuse have higher percentage of suicide attempts. The percentage rises from three percent to 11 percent. This is important for my research paper because it shows that historically more women than men have suicidal thoughts and commit suicide.

Also, you mentioned that women are more likely to attempt suicide. Does this mean you're going to focus on suicide in young women specifically or men as well?

    2. Alitzel, I feel that you have a very interesting topic. However, given your evidence presented above I would have to agree with Shanel. Topic: Colorism
    Research:
The highly interrelated relationship between the cosmetics industry and the Western beauty ideal can also be traced back from the other way around. The cosmetics industry work to constantly and persistently reinforce the ideal into the mindset of people, making it into an accepted social norm. Commercials by cosmetic firms continuously remind the consumers of what they should look like, and thus eventually what they should consume in order to achieve the said goals. In such manner, the constant bombardment of strategically produced advertisements on TV, magazines, and in shops, works to ensure the beauty ideal is here to stay.
There is a wide range of factors at play that help maintain the global obsession with the White ideal of beauty, and especially that of light skin tone. One of the perpetuators is the cosmetics industry. In modern capitalist economy in which consumerism has become the social norm, the cosmetics industry prospers, thanks to the consumers’ ceaseless quest for beauty as dictated by the Western ideal. The quest for fairer skin, in particular, embodies the reality of colorstruck world – to borrow Verna Keith’s words – where colorism is firmly established as part of social structure.

    Explanation:
This article explains how to media reinforces beauty standards. I especially find it interesting since in today’s society, there is actual technology and procedures that can help people reach these goals and it is increasing in popularity and accessibility. I’ll probably use this information as more evidence as to how colorism affects women in particular.

    1. I like the strong use of detail and focus on the way media chooses to enforce this certain lifestyle upon people's daily life through the media's description of the "average person" in society. I only suggest that you use the name of a source of media, such as Victoria's Secret or Maybelline to show how women are required to be a certain way just to be in the commercial, and then you could talk about how those "perfect few" are chosen to represent the expectations of women in society.

  12. Topic: Discrimination in the media

    Appeals to Logos

I would like to start off this post be clarifying my stance on the issue, as suggested by a classmate. I believe that the media is responsible for promoting news that is stereotypical and when doing so I feel like they should be more cautious. When a news channel reports that there has been a robbery committed by an African-American, they should proceed to tell the audience the percentage behind robberies committed by African-Americans. If they were to do simple things like this, then there would not be as much anger and upset people towards the media, because they would be seen as presenting facts as opposed to presenting offensive news. An example of the media’s reporting leading to trouble would be Fox 11’s coverage on Paris.

“The city of Paris plans to sue Fox News over what it described as derisive on-air comments, a spokesperson confirmed to CBS News.

They plan to sue for damage to “the honor and image of Paris,” the spokesperson
    told CBS News’ Elaine Cobbe.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo first announced the decision on CNN.

Fox News has come under attack in France recently for its portrayal of life in Paris’ Muslim neighborhoods in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. According to the New York Times, the network has aired segments proclaiming parts of the French capital “no-go zones” for non-Muslims, which the police avoid.”

This is a rare event of which the news station has made a false accusation based on the limited information they were able to gather, and with time I am sure that this may become the everyday story of communities that feel misrepresented through the media’s release of controversial news.

  13. Topic: Are ancient myths based on facts
I chose this topic because a great deal of people believe that the ancient myths of the world are nothing but the over active imagination of the people that lived in those time periods. I think that a lot of the myths are based on truth and have connections to human life. Also that these myths in certain religions are similar.
Working Thesis: Myths that are found in religions may be just that but they're not only connected to each other but also they are some that may be based on truths.

    Research: logos
I wanted to continue my research on the end. So i looked up information on death. i found that in both greek mythology and in christianity, they are not only similar, but they mention each other.

In christianity, there is a depiction of a skeleton wearing a black cloak and guiding the dead to the underworld. This figure was known as grimm reaper and his trade was death. There was a similar monster in greek mythology, his name was Charen his job was to guide the dead souls to the underworld. Also in greek mythology the lowest level of the underworld is Tartarus, a place equivalent to the christians’ Hell. A place in which the baddest of the bad went. A place where you were eternally punished for your sins against god or gods in the blistering heat of rivers and lakes.

In the book of Revelations in the New Testament, Hades himself is mention. It is said as for the final judgement Hades and death itself were to be thrown in a lake of hellfire. Jesus would come and collect all the souls that didn’t belong to Hades and take them to heaven.

I felt like I connected with the information I found today. I remember going to Las Vegas as a child and really wanting to see this one magic show in particular that featured different sorts of cats including lions and tigers. At the time I found this to be very interesting. After reading different articles I have come to the conclusion that these shows are barbaric.

    Research: AppeaL to pathos
"A January 12, 2015, inspection report cited a repeat violation for Arthur's failure to keep facilities in good repair after den boxes in two tiger enclosures were found with chewed edges that were splintering. Arthur was previously cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a similar noncompliance last year, and according to this new inspection, the problem remained uncorrected. During an inspection at Harrah's Laughlin on December 28, 2013, the USDA cited Arthur for numerous violations, including forcing two tigers and a lion to undergo painful declawing procedures—which involve amputating part of each toe—in violation of long-standing USDA policy. The agency also cited him for confining a snow leopard and a bobcat to unsafe enclosures; failing to use adequate barriers to protect the animals and the public; denying the cats the opportunity to exercise; and failing to provide the cats with sufficient space to "make normal postural and social adjustments." The USDA subsequently issued Arthur an official warning in connection with these violations."

This article explains how big cats used in shows are being treated inhumanely. Most big cats go through a surgical procedure in which they are declawed and defanged. It is a very painful process because their claws are actually part of the last bone join of the paw, so removing the paw is amputating the bone. The owners of these big cats do this because they know they are wild animals and pose a threat, so by removing the animal's "weapons" the danger is reduced.

"Founded in 1988, the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) is a non-governmental organization that promotes women's human rights by working internationally to combat sexual exploitation in all its forms. In the following viewpoint, the Asia Pacific branch of the CATW argues against prostitution in any form. They analyze and carefully rebut the most common arguments for prostitution, including the freedom of choice, the right to work, and the freedom of expression. Finally, they call on feminists to make the world a better place for women by fighting against the legalization and social acceptance of prostitution."

Evidence: So far through out my research I have been finding evidence to support my claim which is allowing people to get a more positive vibe of prostitution but now I want to begin to find counter arguments and allow the readers to get both perspectives of prostitution. This evidence will be my counter argument and this may strengthen my claim so that I'm not being one sided.

"Sylvia Martinez, editor in chief of New York-based Latina magazine, a publication that covers fashion, beauty and issues of importance to Latinas, finds nothing wrong or offensive with the garments. "If Latinas can wear DKNY or Paul Frank or Asian- decorated T-shirts, then why can't you have Anglos or, for that matter, every ethnic group walking around with tees that say 'Chica'? We understand people that want to be as cool as we are, so we say the more the merrier."

Other observers view this fashion trend of the moment with less enthusiasm.

Denise Sandoval, a Cal State Northridge professor in the Chicana and Chicano Studies department, says it's become trendy to wear a shirt that says "Latina" or "Authentica," regardless of one's ethnic background. But when she wears such a shirt, "it has political meaning because I'm Chicana."

"What does it mean to be a non-Chicana wearing such a T-shirt? I think it's just about style. When the style of Chicano culture becomes a commodity, then in that sense it's about making money, not about teaching us Chicano consciousness or making a cultural connection. It's about looking pretty or being down with the latest look."

Quintanilla, Michael. "Of Culture and Commodity; L.A.'s Smitten with Latino-Inspired Tees, but is this a Cultural Embrace Or Merely Fashion?" Los Angeles TimesJun 04 2003. ProQuest. Web. 11 Feb. 2015 .

As a testament to white privilege and/or class privilege, the people who use culture as "fashion-foward" trends seem to disregard the cultural background of the clothing they where. They view it as a a way to remain "cool". As if wearing another person's cultural as a costume isn't offensive.

  17. Topic: NFL Stadium leads to gentrification

(cont.) an increase of wealthy white people replace blacks and Latinos in gentrifying communities.

    Research: logos

“The distinction that he fails to draw is how a neighborhood changes not just during the first wave of gentrification, but over many subsequent ones, waves that have become de rigeuer in New York, as well as the very real distinction between people who are, in his own words “forced out” of a neighborhood and those that chose to leave. While poor people may move away from both gentrifying and ungentrifying neighborhoods, those who leave gentrified neighborhoods often have no choice in the matter. And while gentrification does carry with it some undeniable benefits like lower crime rates and better schools, these are not much good to residents if they aren’t able to stay and take advantage of them. Rent-stabilization and property ownership help to reduce displacement, of course, but over time, gentrifying New York neighborhoods have become richer and whiter.
In Fort Greene, for example, The New York Times reported that between 2000 and 2012, the proportion of whites rose 13 percent, according to census data, while the share of blacks shrunk 15 percent. At the same time, median household income rose from $44,987 to $56,436.
Meanwhile, in 2011, The Times reported that Bed-Stuy’s white population had soared 633 percent since 2000—”the biggest percentage increase of any major racial or ethnic group in any New York City neighborhood.” The black population dropped from 40,000 to 34,000 and the white population increased from 2,000 to 18,000 people. And last year WYNC reported that in one of the neighborhood’s census tracts, 43 percent of the population moved between 2000 and 2009, while median income rose to $52,253.
And in Manhattan, as of 2010, Harlem, one of the last minority strongholds in the borough, ceased to be majority black, a shift that was surely not the exclusive result of voluntary relocation.
At the same time, while Mr. Buntin argues that demographic change is largely the result of lower-income Latinos moving into new neighborhoods, in New York, a number of racially-diverse, low- and middle-income neighborhoods have become both whiter and richer. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, as the black middle-class shrunk, white, high-income clusters grew at the fastest rate of any group in the city, increasing 44 percent between 2000 and 2010, and 32 percent in the geographic areas they occupy. “In particular, whites moved into racially diverse neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, downtown Brooklyn and Long Island City.”

Velsey, Kim. "Gentrification May Be Complicated, But It's Not a Myth and Neither Is Displacement." Observer. N.p., 20 Jan. 2015. Web. 11 Feb. 2015. .

    Explanation:
In my previous post, I read an article that gentrification is a myth and this new article debunks all of the author’s arguments. She states in fact that people do get misplaced, and are replaced by a majority of a whiter community. The author uses statistics given in the changes in NY communities with the increase of wealthy whites and the decrease in blacks and Latinos
My next step is finding more statistics about the rate in which people are moving..

  18. Topic: Aside from all of the controversy with social media, I would also like to focus on one of the negatives of the media, specifically cyberbullying. Cryberbullying takes a huge effect mainly on teenagers that may have given too much trust to publicize their privacy or receive hurtful comments from other teenagers for no reason. The internet couldn't be the safest place to trust others, and it also leaves many to reflect on others without much kindness.

Research: "Cyberbullying presents unique challenges in the sense that the perpetrator can attempt to be anonymous, and attacks can happen at any time of day or night."
"Those who said they were cyberbullied were also most likely to say they had considered suicide -- 28%, compared to 22% who were physically bullied and 26% who received bullying text messages"

  19. Topic: My topic regards Gay Marriage. Over the years, gay marriage has started to be a bigger deal throughout world am I feel that as time continues, gay marriage will have a stronger impact on the world. Personally I am ok with gay marriage because i find no reason to separate a couple if they are in love. I am Catholic and according to the Catholic religion and Christians I believe, although theses are both the same thing, we should be against Gay Marriage because the God stated in the bible that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The only problem I would have with a male gay marriage or a male gay person would be if they begin to seek interest in me.

    Research:

"Gay marriage is incompatible with Christianity (and for that matter, Islam & Judaism). If someone asks you why you oppose gay marriage, the only thing you really have to say to explain it is, "I'm a Christian."

" Gay marriage may be where it starts, but it wouldn't be where it ends. Once the definition of marriage is arbitrarily transformed to make gay activists happy, there's no chance it's going to stop there. For example, you could make a much better case for polygamy than you can for gay marriage. It has a much more robust historical tradition, it's more consistent with religious values, it produces children -- there simply is no compelling, logical reason why gay marriage should become the law of the land without also granting polygamy the same legal status."

    http://townhall.com/columnists/johnhawkins/2012/02/17/five_reasons_to_oppose_gay_marriage/page/full

Explanation: What I just posted up there are two reasons on why gay marriage should be allowed. The first reason talks about how gay marriage is incompatible with Christianity and other religions.First of all, not all Christians or Jew etc are gay. In 2013, out of 34,000 americans, 96% were straight. That shows again how not everyone is gay. I can make a stronger argument in the couple days to come.

  20. Topic: Taxing churches

Research:"If Churches Don’t Pay, We all shoulder the burden
“Those who use must contribute.” The modern tax system is an interpretation of this adage, guided by the founding principles of government. While the tax figures may not be the same for all, they do reflect the interpretation of equality among those that benefit from government services. To exempt one beneficiary from such taxation responsibilities forces the other beneficiaries to unfairly shoulder their tax burden, while giving them no additional benefits. The church and religious institutions are an example of a beneficiary of government services. Whether they choose to accept the services or not, they are subject to the same protection as everyone else and they enjoy the same social peace effected by governments existence and effective implementation of laws."

In this piece of evidence I chose to analyze different reasons for taxing churches monetary and non-monetary. As this article states, by allowing churches to remain tax exempt a greater burden is placed on the rest of the citizens of the U.S. Wether or not churches recieve it they recieve the same public services as any other tax payers. Also western countries are stuggling mightily to pay off their debt. If churches in America pay their 6,000,000 property tax this burden will be lifted much easier.

  21. topic: global warming
Research: “Long-lived gases that remain semi-permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are described as "forcing" climate change. Gases, such as water vapor, which respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are seen as "feedbacks.”...Carbon dioxide (CO2). A minor but very important component of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is released through natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions and through human activities such as deforestation, land use changes, and burning fossil fuels.”
This time I decided to focus my research on the scientific point of view of global warming to have facts to support that global warming is a serious issue. My research stated some processes like the green house gasses affecting global warming is a natural process. I could use this for a counter argument. The research also states how humans affect of global warming through “deforestation” and the use of fossil fuels.”

  22. Research: The human body. The well-trained, well-toned athelete was the main subject matter [1]. These athletic bodies were compared to the devine - so much so that Greek gods were depicted with the same young athletic bodies as the sports heroes.

that I'm focusing on the evolution of modern art, I'd like to look more on the subjects of classical art to see how they have evolved.

This will show me how the non-divine models of today differ from the almost holy models of the past.

  23. Topic: I'm digging into the past and reading books touching on my topic. Most of the books I found at the library were written in the '90s, some before that.

Research: "The big lie perpetuated on Western society is the idea of women's inferiority, a lie so deeply ingrained in our social behavior that merely to recognize it is to risk unraveling the entire fabric of civilization." (page 1)

"Like two-way mirrors linking the immediare past with the immdeiate future, women in the movies reflected, perpetuated, and in some respects offered innovations on the roles of women in society." (page 12).

This research will contribute to the history of female influences in the media. I think the fact that it dates back a few years will emphasize how far the media has come to either change or become more severe.

  25. Topic: Throughout his project, I have been researching undocumented immigrants. Almost every article I saw talked about Latin American immigrants. For this post, I would like to focus on immigrants from other parts of the world.

Research: (Appeals to Logos)"Though Brennan shares the hardships of undocumented status with other illegal immigrants throughout the country — last year she was unable to attend her brother's funeral in Ireland for fear that she'd be denied reentry to the U.S. — she acknowledges that Irish illegals do have a slight advantage. It's all in the stereotypes — race-based, language-based, class-based.Her friend, contractor Dermot Byrne, who also is here illegally, agrees. "From my experience, we're not singled out. If someone's driving down the street and they see five Mexican guys on one side and five Irish guys on the other, they're going to think that the Mexicans are illegal, even though it could be the other way around."

Despite his status, Byrne has placed a pro-immigration-reform sticker on his car, as well as Irish versions of an "I love Jalisco" decal that identify his and his wife's home counties in the old country.

Irish immigrant advocates are acutely aware that the American public doesn't identify the Irish as alien, let alone illegal, and they consciously leverage this positive prejudice to their advantage."

This shows how when people think of undocumented immigrants the stereotypes leads them to think about Latin Americans. Other people who are immigrants and look white don't face the hardships that come with stereotypes. I could use this to argue that we should stop generalizing undocumented immigrants.

  26. Topic: International Adoption

Research: " After rising for decades, overseas adoptions have dropped by nearly half since 2004.The number of children in Chinese orphanages has risen about 50% since 2004."

The research shows a decline in the international adoption rates from year 2004. The chart illustrates that in year 2004, the U.S, a receiving country of adoptions was at an all time high of 20,000 adoptions. However, in 2011 there was roughly 9,000 received adoptions. Although no exact reason is reason for the decline, I can assume that the U.S economic recession played a role. The numbers continued to decrease in U.S, but in countries like France, Spain, and Canada the numbers fluctuated throughout the years and had no steady direction.

  27. Topic: Drunk Driving

I have been researching and I have found that I have different views now because there are many factors that play into the laws. And so many people have different view points in this topic too.

"Penalties for drunk driving are set by state law and can include fines, suspension or loss of license, or prison sentences. In many cases, first-time offenders are given lighter sentences, such as fines, license restrictions, mandatory attendance at alcohol education classes or counseling, or community service."

This quote helps me because it explains the different penalties for first offenders. But I am also in a struggle because I feel now that first offenders should have a punishment but there has to be a lot of enforcement from the law.
