Hello Students!
Post your first research as a comment to my post.
In your post, you MUST include the following:

  • A working thesis or claim (working because it may change)
  • The sources, paraphrased and/or quoted.
  • The MLA style citation for each each source.
  • A few sentences explaining the relevance of the source in relation to your topic.
  • A few sentences explaining how the source has informed your argument.

Be sure to comment on at least 2 peers, evaluating the relevance of the source in relation to the argument. You may also present counter arguments your peer may not have thought of that he/she needs to address in a counterclaim. Maximum 2 peer comments per research post.

NOTE: All of your following research posts must be like the first unless told otherwise.

  1. Thesis:
Affirmative action is an inefficient, discriminatory system that does not make education more equal and diverse. Instead of race, colleges should base their admissions on socio-economic circumstances.

    Evidence:
“Another common criticism is that as a form of reverse discrimination, affirmative action keeps societies aware of the barriers that divide it and actually perpetuates alienation and resentment between ethnically diverse groups, thus increasing rather than reducing racial tension,”(History).
    • The source is credible because it is an org website. The website contains both sides of the argument concerning affirmative action. This evidence supports my claim that affirmative action perpetuates discrimination, but this time against people who are not minorities.

“Students admitted on this basis are often ill-equipped to handle the schools to which they've been admitted,” (Balanced).
    • If students are admitted to colleges based on race instead of merit, there is no assurance that those students have the skills needed to succeed in the school.

“Because of affirmative action, a minority may beat out someone more capable for a job or school, simply because of race or gender,” (Affirmative).
    • People who truly have the qualifications for a school might not be accepted because his/her spot was given to someone based merely on race.

    1. Assuming that colleges are accepting students based on race to meet their quotas/percentage/or to have more of a specific race to apply to that college...what will be the difference if they do the same with income, education or occupation? Isn't just as wrong? What if maybe a student A doesn't have a high grade or such.. the college will be taking in student B who has a higher grade but what they aren't seeing is the potential that the student A has that student B doesn't. Isn't that rightfully wrong too?

    3. I agree with Yessy. Also you should research more evidence as to why it is a good thing, so that you don't come off as biased. Explore both sides of the argument :).

    4. Thank you for the feedback. I believe income is a more accurate method used to admit students. Affirmative action was created to make admittance fairer for minorities at disadvantages to excel in school. However, being minority does not mean you are at disadvantage, as just being white mean you had all the resources to succeed. Income is a more accurate way to tell if a student was deprived of funding at school to excel academically, but still managed to succeed.

  2. Topic: "Paparazzi Protection for Celebrity Children"
    Thesis/Claim:
Is it not bad enough that children already have to face the cruelty of what it is to growing up to being "harassed", "ambushed", and "traumatized" by a mob of men with big black cameras that follow them around "...shouting, arguing, camp[ing] out everywhere...all day, every day, to continue traumatizing [the] kids." Simply because their parents are either award winning celebrities or reality TV show stars. Is that the reason why it's okay to snap pictures of these 'celebrity children' and publicize them on tabloids, magazines and online? According to some celebrity parents like Jennifer Garner and Halle Berry this is no proper way for their child or any child brought upon the spot light to live in. Therefore, they have taken to the courts to put a stop/limit to these "lawbreaking photographers".

    Sources:

#1 "Garner and Berry ask for law protecting their kids from media." UPI NewsTrack 14 Aug. 2013. Criminal Justice Collection. Web. 27 Jan. 2014.

(Relevance: This article talks about both mothers (Garner & Berry) and their concern for their protection of their children , along with their concern for the torment their kids face everyday walking outside of their home.)

#2 "California cracks down on celeb photogs." UPI NewsTrack 1 Oct. 2005. Criminal Justice Collection. Web. 27 Jan. 2014.

(Relevance: In this article it discusses a bill that was signed due to the unprofessional work of paparazzi's that take "aggressive" photos of celebrities. This will be a good source to use because it demonstrates how a paparazzi acts and is throughout the work of photographing a celebrity; this allows me to use it as an example on to comparing it with how they act the same way when it's a child.)

#3 "Halle Berry can't move daughter to France." UPI NewsTrack 10 Nov. 2012. Criminal Justice Collection. Web. 27 Jan. 2014.

(Relevance: In this article it explains how mother, Halle Berry was rejected of sending her daughter Nahla to France due to custodial issues. This is also a good source to use because the article explains how making this decision was hard enough for Berry but harder that this was rejected. All Berry wanted was to send her daughter to France where there is a much safer environment and where paparazzi have stricter laws. -Berry sure is devoted to keeping her daughter safe!)

#4 Goodale, Gloria. "Is California going too far to protect celebrity kids from paparazzi?" Christian Science Monitor 25 Sept. 2013. Criminal Justice Collection. Web. 27 Jan. 2014.

(Relevance: This article has many view points that come straight from professors at different colleges that either agree or disagree with "protecting celebrity children from the paparazzi")

    How source(s) inform claim:
Based on the previous sources and other sources I've read and come across have expanded my mind and thoughts on the issue. With the information I've been able to understand the assignment and the social issue(s) of this topic and therefore, I've been able to see and understand the view of both sides (pros/cons of protecting the children).

    1. Yesenia good evidence. My only suggestion is for the evidence regarding Halle Berry sending her daughter off to France one is start the evidence off with the paparazzi being less insane in France because when I began reading it I didn't clearly see the relevance until the end. A counter argument to your topic is how is the paparazzi suppose to know that people don't want their picture taken when they're with their kids because most celebrities do? There has been an exception for Berry and Garner, but have any other celebs complained?

  4. Thesis:
Based on recorded history from various different civilizations, civilizations that were not only developed in different time periods but in different parts of the world, one is lead to believe that each saw the same supernatural beings in the sky. These beings namely being Extraterrestrials; the acceptance of their existence is evident in the different cultures
“...called the attention of the world to some golf pre-Columbian artifacts, centuries old, produced by indigenous cultures. According to him, those were reproductions of jet aircrafts, a conclusion supported by doctor Arthur Poyslee, of the New York Aeronautic Institute. “
This supports my claim because, indigenous people, whose civilization were at their prime in the 15th century, created aircrafts out of gold. Aircrafts were being made in an era when sea travel was deemed impossible.
“The Madonna (painted in 15th century) with Saint Giovannino…above Mary’s left shoulder is a shinning, or glowing, disk shaped object. A man and his dog is seen looking up at the disk.”
This supports my claim because it shows how the picture of the Madonna has evidence of an unidentified object in the sky, like a shinning disk. This is also a description made by the ancient Egyptians with their god, Anten.

    1. One counter argument could possibly be how do the ones who saw this "shinning disk" know it is supernatural? Could they have maybe mistaken this with something else? Your evidence does prove that this idea was accepted by other cultures, but centuries ago and why should we accept this idea today? Maybe including a quote or facts about how they're is a possibility that these extraterrestrials beings exist would open your audience mind to this idea.

    2. I agree with Morgan, because nowadays many people are believed to be making these stories up to fill our heads with "the impossible". How can your claim support the idea that this is all real and not just some old legend or myth? Maybe including this view point and adding how the government is hiding deeper info of this and why it is that in every story we hear it's basically the same thing being repeated in multiple ways. What is it that they can possibly be keeping from us? Is it for our actual protection or just to build suspense that we are "being kept safe"?

  5. Thesis: Rap music today is detrimental to today's youth, and therefore should be censored.

-This article discusses the need for African Americans to take a stand against racist and sexist rap lyrics. It highlights the fact that "rappers who use violent and degrading lyrics must be educated as to why they are contributing to racism and sexism in America". And it goes on further with a statement from Snoop Dogg that stated that his lyrics (even though they are referring to women) aren't applicable to ALL women.

-This article is about putting a stop to rappers who make guns seem like the best thing to possess, and also to the misconception that if you don't own one then you're missing out/not cool. Since the inner city is bleeding from gun crime, it is the wrong thing to glorify. Similarly, rappers shouldn't glorify killings period.

-In this article, the issue of women being degraded by rap music/rappers is discussed. It illustrates the fact that once the "words" are spoken (or in this case, rapped) they turn into "deeds", which includes, but is not limited to physically harming women.

    1. I see where you are coming from. Your sources do tie into your thesis of how it should be censored. I also see the reasons why it should be censored, because of the promotion of guns or degrading women through the vulgar lyrics.
A counter argument would be the band FLOBOTS. If you listen to their lyrics, it is about how they want to start a change for the better of society.

    2. I see that your thesis is to show how rap music today is detrimental to today's youth, and therefore should be censored. However, most music today especially rap and heavy metal most of the lyrics contain references to violence, sex, and/or drugs. While many argue that this is dangerous for children to hear many might say that it is ok to listen to those type of song because some teenager often faces violence, drugs, suicide, pregnancy, and other aspects of this music.

      Delete
    3. This is an interesting topic that covers a lot of media contrevorsy. A counterargument you should be aware of is that if rap music should be censored then should all sources of media be censored? Think about it, how many other genres of music, art forms, television shows, etc speak and sometimes even encourage this behavior? Also, something that can strengthen your case is to search up statistics of how many teenagers actually listen to rap music to see if it's increased or decreased throughout time.

  6. Governments shall not ban female and male circumcision in Islamic nations because it helps carry on cultural heritage.

#1: “Supporters are equally adamant that the practice is a private religious and cultural matter, and that westerners who oppose it are trying to impose their own cultural standards on other societies.”

Westerners would argue that circumcision is immoral and a cruel practice. They are more likely to oppose circumcision to protect individual rights and prevent health risks. However, in the eyes of those living in traditional Islamic villages in Africa or in other Islamic nations, circumcision is a religious necessity.

#2: “Reasons given for female circumcision have varied and include: meeting a religious requirement, promoting cultural heritage, reducing sexual desire, preventing promiscuity, guaranteeing fidelity within marriage, enhancing fertility, and maintaining women's health.”

The relevance of this quote to my claim is that female circumcision is a religious and cultural practice that’s used to value virginity before marriage, and to keep individuals from getting infected with sexual transmitted diseases.

#3: “Methodist missionaries and government administrators in some areas, realizing that the local residents would not abandon the practice, oversaw circumcisions and trained circumcisers, and some doctors even became involved in performing them.”

The relevance of this quote to my claim is that foreigners and nontraditional government officials need to allow circumcisions in Islamic nations. Permitting circumcisions will allow for females and males to be circumcised safely with the adequate tools necessary to prevent fatalities or infections.

    1. So you're arguing that governments shall ONLY allow Islamic nations to perform circumcision? What about people who aren't religious and just want to ensure that they won't be infected with STD's for example? Also as a counter argument, some might argue that the people being circumcised don't have the option to opt out because their parent's are the ones making the decisions (since the preferred age is 7/before puberty).

    2. Many people might say that the human right to bodily integrity is more important than the human right to freedom of religion. Religious tradition is a poor excuse to subject a baby to circumcision. Although people started practicing circumcision long before the birth of monotheistic religions. The risks of circumcision is infection.

President Barack Obama argues that “failing to develop a modern system of universal health coverage for all American poses a threat to American health”. Obama states how people should not despise the Obama health care law; although he does admit that this law has caused a decrease of job. 8. Thesis: Due to mass media, advertising and television programs are making a ton of money while children could possibly be losing a high chance at academic achievements.

“In the us there are over 57 million school age children and teenagers who spend about $100 billion each year on sweets, food, video, and electronic products, movies, clothes and shoes”

Relevance: This evidence shows that television can have an adverse affect on children’s achievements and wallet apparently if TV is watched more than ten hours a week. But this is not including the damage of the other electronics we all use daily for entertainment that also have a load of advertisements that influence us.Proving my point of children losing while mass media gains.

  9. Thesis: Although abortion has been made legal since the landmark case Roe vs Wade in 1973, it should be made completely illegal to terminate the life of an unborn human unless it poses a risk to the mother’s life.

“Roe v. Wade made it illegal to restrict a woman's right to an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. It also held that, during the second trimester, laws can control the procedure only when the health of the woman is at risk.”
    - This source is relevant to my topic because it discusses information on a landmark case concerning the history of the legalization of abortion. This case made the decision of abortion completely up to the mother’s choice within the first trimester and legal with regulations during the second trimester. It discusses how it is the woman’s right to choose because of her right to privacy.

“Rape is a horrific violation of human dignity, but it is not a valid justification for abortion. An entire generation of lives has been lost due to abortion and this absence of population growth will have a negative economic effect on the country. But a baby produced by rape has the same right to life as any other baby. Abortion ends the life of an innocent unborn human being.”
    - Many may argue that it is essential to allow victims of rape to have an abortion however, as described in the source, the fetus is a human and this innocent human being has no blame for what occurred. This source provides information on why rape shouldn’t be a justification for an abortion.
“In the united States, only one maternal death occurs per 530,000 abortions performed at 10 weeks after LMP or earlier; this increases to one death per 17,000 abortions performed from 18-22 weeks, and one death per 6,000 abortions performed past 22 weeks.”
    - This article provides possible counterarguments to my claims. It gives information on possible complications that may occur due to an abortion. This adds on to the argument that abortion should be illegal unless it poses a threat to the life of the woman. It also provides with alternatives to abortion such as adoption.

    1. Claudia I like your topic, I just feel that rape is not the only factor to why abortion should be legal. You should introduce other factors such as the right of the woman, the life of the woman, and what not. Something you should research is whether the rights of the fetus are even acknowledged in the United States.

      Delete
    2. Claudia, your evidence ties in very well to your claim/thesis. Something you should consider presenting as evidence as well is the fact that the unborn baby has a right to life and how it is not fair that it’s okay to kill an unborn child, but not okay to kill someone out in the world.

  10. Thesis:
Throughout the years media has pointed fingers at women for wearing provocative clothing and drinking excessively therefore putting themselves in situations that call for rape. No one is ever asking to be raped regardless of their clothing, behavior, previous sexual history, or alcohol consumption. There are more factors in the cause of rape, but the blame is always on the perpetuator.

    Evidence:
“She was 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, wearing a miniskirt and a halter top with a bare midriff. Now, again, there you go. So every predator in the world is gonna pick that up at two in the morning,” (ThinkProgress).
“Michelle Malkin...At some point these young women have to take responsibility for putting themselves in vulnerable positions,” (Crisostomo).
    • These sources are credible, because the first is from a .org website and the second is credible, because it’s written from Georgetown University Women’s Center. This evidence supports my claim that media and society assume women are to be blamed for rape.

“This dynamic finds expression in a number of beliefs about what is natural, acceptable, and even desirable in male-female sexual interaction: that the male will be persistent and aggressive, the female often reluctant and passive; that the male is invulnerable, powerful, hard, and commanding, and that women desire such behavior from men; that “real men” are able to get sexual access to women when, where, and how they want it; that sexual intercourse is an act of male conquest; that women are men's sexual objects or possessions; and that men “need” and are entitled to sex,” (Rebecca Whisnant)
    • This source is credible because it’s from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. This evidence supports my claim by showing that there are more factors contributing to rape and some of it are societal norms of gender roles.

“If it were true that the fashion of the day was the reason for the rape of women - then how could it be that rape exists in countries where women are not dressing according to western fashions,” (Debatewise).
    • This source is credible because it’s a .org website and each opinion is backed up with a link from it’s original source. This quote further proves my statement above that clothing is not a factor in rape. Women all over the world are raped and in some countries it is illegal to even show cleavage yet are still being raped, therefore“clothing” being a factor to rape and why it’s the victim’s fault is void.

  11. Thesis: Contrary to popular belief, genetically modified foods are actually safe for human consumption, therefore they shouldn't be banned

#1: “GMO critics say genetically engineering a food could affect its nutritional value or create allergens or toxins in the food, although these claims are disputed by federal regulators, including the Food and Drug Administration.”

This is relevant to my topic because it shows why GMO's are safe. This source informs my argument because it provides information on how the FDA and other agencies regulate genetically modified foods the same as any other foods. The FDA regulates GMO’s for safety and so far they have recognized these foods as safe.

#2: “Anti-GMO campaigners…assert time and again that genetically modified crops have not been safety tested or that the research done to date on the health or environmental impact of GMOs has “all” been done by the companies that produce the seeds...
    That is false.”

The relevance of this quote to my topic is that it presents a possible counterargument to my claim. Opponents of GMO’s claim that genetically engineered crops are ‘understudied’. While that may be true, considering that the production of genetically modified has only happened for 20 years, the fact that GMO’s are regulated by the FDA is an important piece of information to grasp on to.

#3: “…[T]he U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that GMOs have been in the U.S. food supply for about 20 years. The agency also stated in a consumer update that "Foods from genetically engineered plants must meet the same requirements, including safety requirements, as foods from traditionally bred plants." Such foods, the FDA added, "are generally as nutritious as foods from comparable traditionally bred plants... [They] have not been more likely to cause an allergic or toxic reaction than foods from traditionally bred plants."

This is relevant to my claim because this sources provides more information on why GMO's can be regarded as safe to consume. GMO’s have to go through safety requirements like traditionally bred plants, so if they weren’t safe to consume, then why are super markets filled with genetically modified foods? This quote shows that GMO’s are as safe or not and nutritional as the traditionally bred plants.

    1. I think you have a really interesting topic, and your evidence certainly covers the Health/Safety aspect. Another interesting angle I think you could look at is impact on traditions. A few years back, I read an article about anti-GMO riots in the Philippines where the Filipino farmers were outraged by a corporation's GMO's. The "golden rice" would help with some nutrient deficiencies, but it put the farmers out of business because the corp. could produce golden rice much easier than the farmers could grow their traditional crops.

  12. Thesis: Many factors come into play when one nation (or group of people) decides to wage war on another, such as money, territory and resources. Most factors tend to be tangible, however; one factor that is palpable is religion. Whether it is a crusade or a jihad, the war and violence is always justified by the phrase “In the name of [the superior being]”. Religious influence in war is heavy not only from encouraging soldiers to take territories but also to take pride in murdering other human beings.

Evidence: “The Big three religions teach that war is wrong and only justified when it is a last resort to settle a conflict. Yet many groups such as Islamic extremists use the holy war (jihad) as a reason to promote violence” http://lass.purduecal.edu/cca/mgv/Social_Issues/Religion/rel_war.html
This piece of evidence shows that religion does teach that war is bad, however, it is commonly used to justify acts to gain a personal goal.

    1. I think that your thesis and, in particular, the first piece of evidence bring up a very interesting point. You might want to see if you can find some evidence from the perspective of an Islamic extremist, however. I think you might find that many such extremists believe that there actually is their last resort.

    2. Your thesis is very interesting, you should back up your argument by including evidence of the different wars that were caused because of religious tension.

  13. Thesis: Disney movies are a bad influence for children.

#1: "Television shows and music videos frequently objectify women, and even Disney movies created for children contain sexy heroines."
-AboutKidsHealth. "The Sexualization of Girls Is Harmful." Is Childhood Becoming Too Sexualized. Olivia Ferguson and Hayley Mitchell Haugen. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2010. At Issue. Rpt. from "Sexy Babies: How Sexualization Hurts Girls." 2007. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 28 Jan. 2014.
-This quote mentions how Disney, a so called kid friendly channel, has some characters that are "sexy". For example, Tinkerbell has a voluptuous body figure and wears a very short dress that hardly cover her curves.
-This has informed me because I realized how much women are portrayed as sexual and beautiful in Disney movies. The main characters are usually flawless. They are really thin and sometimes have really short clothes that flaunt their bodies.
#2: "A few years ago, Mary Finucane started noticing changes in the way her 3-year-old daughter played. The toddler had stopped running and jumping, and insisted on wearing only dresses. She sat on the front step quietly - waiting, she said, for her prince."
    - Hanes, Stephanie. "Little girls or little women? The Disney princess effect." Christian Science Monitor 24 Sept. 2011. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 29 Jan. 2014.
-Disney is portraying that little girls need to wait around for "prince-charming" to come rescue them. When little girls watch Disney they are manipulated to believing that they need to be dependent on a man to be happy.
-This evidence has informed me that many parents around the world are noticing the impact that Disney has on their children. Little girls are thinking about marriage at such a young age and want to be damsels in distress.

#3: The Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media found recently that fewer than 1 in 3 speaking characters (animal or human) in G-rated family films are female, and even animated female characters tend to wear sexualized attire: Disney's Jasmine, for instance, has a sultry off-the-shoulder look, while even Miss Piggy shows cleavage.
    - Hanes, Stephanie. "Little girls or little women? The Disney princess effect." Christian Science Monitor 24 Sept. 2011. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 29 Jan. 2014.
-Disney objectifies women as sex-symbols. Some Disney characters show a lot of skin or wear very provocative clothing, women are portrayed as nothing more than eye candy in some of these movies. There are quite a few movies where women are portrayed as intelligent.
-This informed me because it showed me how women are portrayed to look a certain way. This causes children to get the idea that the only thing that matters in life is the way you look.

    1. I really like your topic! I feel that your evidence leans more to how women are being portrayed rather than being bad for children? Maybe try to expand on your evidence a bit more for both genders or change thesis to fit your evidence

    2. Delmi, this topic is very interesting! I agree with Maris, you should expand on gender roles or how women are seen in society and incorporated into Disney movies.

  14. Thesis:
Whether or not the information released on terrorism is true or not? There is a possibility that Saddam Hussein who was supposedly the mastermind behind these attacks may not have been involved and the place we all link to terrorism Iran may not even have a connection to these acts of terrorism. Most Americans just choose to believe what they were told by the president and national government there is evidence that can prove these individuals wrong.
    Evidence:
"How likely is it that people in the federal government either assisted in the 9/11 attacks or took no action to stop the attacks because they wanted the United States to go to war in the Middle East?" Nearly 23 percent of Democrats called that scenario very likely, and another 28 percent called it somewhat likely. So, writes Smith, more than half of Democrats considered it at least plausible that 9/11 stemmed from a conspiracy within the U.S. government. (For the nation as a whole, 16 percent said it was very likely and 20 percent said it was somewhat likely.)
This evidence shows that there are people in the government that also share suspicion.
"There was a 10 to 50 per cent chance Saddam was involved." A few days later, President Bush told his top aides: "I believe that Iraq was involved, but I'm not going to strike them now."
This evidence shows that there is a possibility that Saddam Hussein was involved and how the President acted so hastily.

  15. Thesis:
The expansion of nuclear energy as a replacement for fossil fuels presents the large dilemma of environmental pollution. Nuclear power is not a feasible, long-term replacement for fossil fuels, despite its capability to produce vast amounts of energy. This power source would inevitably produce problems which surpass those presented by fossil fuels. The immediate benefits of relying on nuclear power for the world’s power are numerous, but they do not outweigh the unavoidable challenges that such an energy system would present.
    ---
“Currently, there are no permanent disposal facilities in the United States for high-level nuclear waste; therefore commercial high-level waste (spent fuel) is in temporary storage”

United States. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Office of Public Affairs. Radioactive Waste: Production, Storage, Disposal. Rev 2. Washington D.C.: Office of Public Affairs, 2002. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. .

This supports the idea that the storage of nuclear waste is a very real problem with nuclear power today. Should the dependence on nuclear power be increased, there would be a great increase in the amount of nuclear waste, but the same shortage of spaces to safely store the waste.
    ---
“Current usage is about 68,000 tU/yr. Thus the world's present measured resources of uranium (5.3 Mt) in the cost category around present spot prices and used only in conventional reactors, are enough to last for about 80 years.”

"Supply of Uranium." World Nuclear Association. World Nuclear Association, Aug. 2012. Web. 26 Jan. 2014. .

At the current rate of use, the known supply of uranium (the main fuel for nuclear reactors) would be depleted in approximately 80 years; a drastic increase in the use of nuclear poer would result in a proportional decrease in the world’s supply of uranium. Nuclear power faces the same issue as fossil fuels: they are dependent upon non-renewable resources.

  16. Thesis: Killing based on love should be legal. Of course not everyone who loves someone should go off killing others, but those who have terminally ill loved ones should have a right to assist their loved ones in suicide if monitored properly.

    Sources:
    1) "Most of specialists agree that there are some situations when the treatment of maintaining the patient alive must be interrupted and the patient should be left to die in peace" (opposing viewpoints).

    2) "euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide by the general public appears to depend on four factors: the level of patient suffering, the extent to which the patient requested death, the age of the patient, and the degree of curability of the illness." (student resources in context)

    3) "Pain is not always adequately controlled by palliative medicine, 5-10% of cancer pain may be of this type and in some cases can only be "palliated" by producing a prolonged unconsciousness, coma or "pharmacological oblivion". This may last for days until death occurs by dehydration and circulatory collapse or retention of bronchial secretions ("the death rattle") pneumonia and pulmonary collapse."(opposing view points).

These articles touch on the many different aspects of why euthanasia should be legal like pain, circumstances, and illness. These quotes prove how assisted suicide can help relieve the suffering with the proper restraints.

  17. Thesis:

Unfortunately, in today’s world, college degrees are seen as high school diplomas because of the high unemployment rate based on education.

    Evidence:

“… [most state] that the weak economy means the job outlook for college grads “is rather bleak,” it is even more bleak if you don’t have a post-secondary degree…”

    • David Sirota believes the economy is struggling because most occupations are searching for college graduates rather than students who have only completed high school; in addition, it’s hopeless and pointless for a high school graduate to look for a job in the 21st century.

“… an entire [nation] of PhDs and still have not enough good paying jobs. But that doesn’t mean access to higher education has nothing to do with a [student’s] economic success or an individual’s job-market prospects. As the data prove, education is a factor…”

    • This particular part is stating that education is one of the elements that is contributing to a student’s future of becoming wealthy (“economic success”). Even though the highest education won’t have enough good paying jobs, some type of education can help a nation’s unemployment rate with a job in general. Education has become a reason because today’s world is built with an economy based on knowledge.

“Among those who graduate with a bachelor's degree, unemployment is 4.9 percent — about half the rate of [9.4 percent] those with only a high school diploma. Also, the income of those who have a four-year degree was about $1,000 a week, which is about two-thirds more than high school graduates.”

    • As seen, a person with at least a bachelor’s degree has a low unemployment rate, compared to a graduate of high school; a college graduate’s income is higher than just a high school graduate.

Relevance: The message still remains the same college education can increase a person’s ability to find a decent job. The purpose of education is a gateway to better opportunities and options of occupations. Even though, college will put a person in debt, it can also pay off for having the higher education degree.

  19. Thesis: Mothers should stay at home and raise their children.

    1. American mothers -“It was written that she embodied the highest qualities found in the typical American mother at the time. Those qualities became the criteria for the selection of her predecessors; First, that she be a successful mother as evidenced by the character and achievements of her children. Second, that she be an active member of a religious body. Third, that she embody those traits highly regarded in mothers: courage, patience, cheerfulness, affection, kindness, understanding, and a homemaking ability. Fourth, that she exemplify in her life and conduct the precepts of the Golden Rule. Fifth, that she have a sense of responsibility in civic affairs and be active in service for public benefit. Sixth, that she be qualified to represent the Mothers of America in all responsibilities attached to her role as the National Mother.

The purpose of this website is to praise the mothers who are doing things right. They put their children as their top priority. This website helps my argument because the UN is praising the women who are doing things correctly.

    2. ''We only have one mother,'' Ms. Ward said from behind tinted sunglasses, her voice breaking. ''God forbid she dies and I have no relationship with her.''
This young girl ran away from home and messed up her life completely. She always wanted to be loved by her mom, but she didn’t have a strong connection with her because she was never around. She believes if her mom was around she would have done something with her life. This helped my argument because it goes to show that mothers truly affect the outcome of children and they should be involved more.

  20. THESIS: Mass media and societal expectations have a negative effect on boys and young men: causing them to become emotionally hardened and inexpressive.

    SOURCES:

    1) "Hyper-masculinity is a gender-based ideology of exaggerated beliefs about what it is to be a man. HM consists of four inter-related beliefs, namely toughness as emotional self-control, violence as manly, danger as exciting, and calloused attitudes toward women and sex"
RELEVANCE: This piece of evidence allows me to narrow the focus of my essay. It also strengthens my opinion in that it is clear that those four beliefs have a negative influence on young men, and society as a whole.

    2) "Some magazines depicted at least one hyper-masculine belief in 90 % or more of advertisements. In addition, reader age, education, and income were all inversely related to the prevalence of hyper-masculine beliefs, with HM depictions presented more often in advertisements targeting young, less educated, and less affluent men."
RELEVANCE: This piece of evidence strengthens my argument because it illustrates how popular magazine read by young men are littered with these hyper-masculine ideals. Advertisements in magazine geared towards promoting hyper-masculinity are actually more common in magazine where the readers are younger. This demonstrates how young men are the targets and the ones most negatively impacted/influenced by these stereotypes.

  21. Thesis: The government should not be allowed to chose the censorship television has on children because it does not allow the parent to have full control over their child.

Sources: "Evidence suggested that parents' behavioral responses were motivated by concern about both their own and other children, but that the pattern of responses varied for the three different effects of viewed violence."
-This connects to my topic because some parents want the government to have censorship. They believe violent television shows are corrupting their children and are scared of the negative impact this violence could potentially have on them. However, I think that the parents, essentially, could decide on what television shows their child watches.

  22. Thesis: Same sex couples should be allowed to adopt a baby and are suitable to raise the child as well as straight couples

    Sources:
Marks debunks the APA's claim that "[n]ot a single study has found children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents."

    http://www.frc.org/issuebrief/new-study-on-homosexual-parents-tops-all-previous-research

Studies with over 59 examples shows that there is not a huge difference in how the child will grow up to be when comparing same sex parents to straight parents. Same sex couples are thought to be inferior when it comes to raising a child but studies prove that they have minimal or the same amount of set backs that straight parents do.

No matter how you slice it, Brodzinsky told LiveScience, gays and lesbians are highly interested in adoption as a group. The 2007 report by the Urban Institute also found that more than half of gay men and 41 percent of lesbians in the U.S. would like to adopt. That adds up to an estimated 2 million gay people who are interested in adoption. It's a huge reservoir of potential parents who could get kids out of the instability of the foster system, Brodzinsky said.

    http://www.livescience.com/17913-advantages-gay-parents.html

There are children who spend a majority of their childhood in foster homes. Many straight parents would like to have a baby under 6 years old and once the baby turns 6, they are less favorable to adopt. Studies show that gay couples are more likely to adopt these older children which benefits both parties; the same sex couples get to be parents and the child does not have to spend more of his/her years in a foster home.
